Clearaudio Smart Power 24V Ovation/Innovation Battery Power Supply, Black

The Clearaudio Smart Power 24V is a battery power supply for 24-volt turntables that galvanically disconnects the drive motor from the mains during operation and feeds it from a 5000 mAh NiMH battery.

A charging system inside the unit continuously monitors voltage and current and calculates the remaining runtime for you. When it gets low, it switches over on its own – playback continues without interruption. So you don't have to go hunting for the plug in the middle of the second side of a record.

Why the Smart Power 24V?

A turntable in the Ovation or Innovation class is already mechanically well sorted; the limiting factor after that sits in the wall socket. The battery delivers DC current with very low internal resistance and a flat discharge curve, and because there's no conductive connection to the mains during operation, nothing from there can interfere either. The solid aluminium housing additionally keeps out vibration and electromagnetic interference.

What you hear

The soundstage becomes deeper and calmer, instruments get air around them, and through dynamic swings the motor remains completely unfazed. Not an effect that jumps out at you on the first note – but one you won't want to give up after a week.

Who is the Smart Power 24V for?

For owners of a 24-volt clearaudio turntable; the manufacturer explicitly names the Ovation, Innovation and Statement series. Plain talk: on an entry-level turntable the money would clearly be better spent on a better cartridge – this is fine-tuning for systems that are already dialled in. It also wants a spot with a bit of breathing room, and the batteries become a service item after some years.

Our verdict

The Smart Power 24V belongs to the small group of accessories nobody argues about after connecting it. It doesn't change your turntable's character, it just removes an unrest that hardly anyone recognised as unrest beforehand. For an Ovation or Innovation it's the logical next step – and one that stays.

Frequently asked questions

Which turntables is the Smart Power 24V intended for?

clearaudio names the Ovation, Innovation and Statement series, i.e. all models with a 24-volt DC input. Concept and Performance DC, by contrast, run on 12 volts and need the smaller version. If you're unsure which power supply is currently connected to your turntable, just send us a photo of the label.

Can I listen while the battery is charging?

Yes. In charging mode the unit keeps feeding your turntable without interruption, the record plays through with no dropouts. The full effect, however, comes from pure battery operation with no mains connected. The display always shows the charge state and the calculated remaining runtime, so you never have to guess.

How long does one battery charge last?

That depends on the turntable and the operating mode: power consumption ranges from 6.5 to 33 watts, the battery holds 5000 mAh. In practice that's enough for long listening evenings. When the voltage runs low, the electronics switch over in good time, without the music being interrupted.

Why buy the Clearaudio Smart Power 24V from HD Zürisee?

Because we don't just sell analogue turntables, we set them up, align them and look after them over the years – including battery service here in Wädenswil.
