The Clearaudio Professional Power 12V is a stabilised linear power supply that feeds the DC motor of a 12-volt Clearaudio turntable in place of the standard plug-in power supply.

Clearaudio developed it for turntables in the concept and Performance DC series. Inside the cylindrical silver aluminium housing work a classic mains transformer and a generously sized filter – technology without switch-mode circuitry, without a switching frequency, and without any urge to draw attention to itself.

Why the Professional Power 12V?

With belt drive, the motor decides speed stability, and the motor depends on whatever comes out of the wall socket. A cheap plug-in power supply delivers DC current with baggage: residual ripple, interference, fluctuations from the mains. The Professional Power stabilises the 12 volts, filters before the output, and delivers them to the turntable via a permanently attached DC cable. A mains switch, an IEC inlet and a grounding terminal sit on the back – that terminal has already saved a fair number of hum loops.

What you get

A calmer foundation for everything that follows. Clearaudio itself positions the Professional Power as a step between the bundled power supply and the battery-powered Smart Power solution. In practice this shows up as a lower noise floor, bass with more grip, and fine detail that used to swim in the background noise. Not an effects box – a correction at the root.

Who is the Professional Power 12V for?

For owners of a concept or Performance DC who want to keep their turntable and still move forward. Straight talk: the output voltage isn't a detail. Ovation and Innovation run on 24 volts – that's where the 24V version belongs, not this unit. And if setup, levelling or tonearm alignment aren't right yet, sort those out first; a power supply won't compensate for them. Anyone wanting to take the turntable completely off the mains is right with the Smart Power 12V.

Our verdict

This is fine-tuning of the honest kind: no new box in the rack, no new tone control, just clean power for the drive. On a well-aligned concept or Performance DC, this is the step that lifts the chain without rebuilding it – and in silver, the cylinder practically disappears next to the turntable.

Frequently asked questions

Which Clearaudio turntables is the Professional Power 12V meant for?

For turntables in the concept and Performance DC series – in other words, every Clearaudio drive running on 12 volts DC. The quickest test: the output voltage is printed on the supplied plug-in power supply. If it says 24 V, you need the other version. Not sure about your model? A short message is enough, we'll sort it out.

Does it also fit Ovation or Innovation?

No. Turntables in the Ovation and Innovation series run on 24 volts; Clearaudio builds the Professional Power 24V for them. A 12-volt power supply won't bring a 24-volt drive up to speed cleanly, and the reverse case can damage the motor electronics. That's why the two versions exist separately.

Professional Power or Smart Power – what's the difference?

The Professional Power smooths and stabilises the current from the mains. The Smart Power runs on battery during operation and disconnects the turntable from it completely. Clearaudio explicitly positions the Professional Power in between: above the standard power supply, below the battery solution.

Does the power supply have a mains switch?

Yes, on the back, alongside the IEC inlet, fuse and grounding terminal. So you can switch the unit off between listening sessions. The DC cable to the turntable is permanently attached and carries the stabilised 12 volts directly to the motor input.
