Clearaudio Innovation Basic Turntable
Clearaudio Innovation Basic Turntable

The Clearaudio Innovation Basic is a turntable that packs the core technology of the Innovation series – patented CMB magnetic bearing, decoupled 24-volt DC motor and Optical Speed Control – into the most compact housing of the family.
It's supplied without tonearm and cartridge. That may sound like homework at first, but it's actually the real charm: you decide which arm and which cartridge go on top, instead of having to accept a ready-made combination.
Why the Innovation Basic?
Because nothing was skimped on substance here, only on mass. The platter runs on an inverted, ground ceramic bearing shaft with a sintered-bronze running bushing, and clearaudio's patented magnetic bearing takes most of its weight off it – friction and bearing noise drop to a minimum as a result. The 24-volt DC motor sits decoupled in a solid metal housing and drives via belt. An optical sensor continuously monitors the speed, the electronics correct it. clearaudio states rated wow and flutter of under ± 0.08 % and a deviation from the target value of ± 0.01 %.
What you get
A turntable with a 40 mm platter of high-density engineering plastic, dynamically balanced, on a curved sandwich chassis of Panzerholz and aluminium. The feet are height-adjustable, so alignment is no test of patience. Two finishes are available: natural wood or black piano lacquer. And should the collector's bug bite you later – a second tonearm can be retrofitted via the optional Swing Base, for example for a mono system alongside the stereo cartridge. You select the three speeds 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm at the push of a button, without moving the belt.
Who is the Innovation Basic for – and who isn't it for?
For you, if you want to enter the Innovation world and decide arm plus cartridge yourself, and if your furniture shouldn't have to carry 24 kilograms. Straight talk: if you're after the last bit of flywheel mass and the 85 mm platter assembly of the big Innovation, you won't find it here. The Basic is the lean entry point, not a shrunk-down flagship. And anyone expecting a ready-fitted turntable to unbox will be happier with a complete package.
Our verdict
The Innovation Basic is the most honest way to enter this series: same bearing technology, same control, less material. Anyone starting here doesn't have a stopgap on the rack, but a turntable that, with a good arm and a cleanly aligned cartridge, carries surprisingly far. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil look with you at which combination fits your records – and we'll also tell you when a step up makes more sense. That includes the uncomfortable question of whether the cartridge, not the turntable, should really play the lead role.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Innovation Basic come with a tonearm?
No. The Innovation Basic is a pure turntable, tonearm and cartridge are chosen separately. Via the optional Swing Base a second arm can even be mounted later. In conversation, we'll put together a combination that fits your system and your records.
Does the Innovation Basic have optical speed control?
Yes. The Basic too works with clearaudio's Optical Speed Control: an optical sensor continuously measures the speed, the electronics correct deviations. clearaudio states rated wow and flutter of under ± 0.08 % and a deviation from the target value of ± 0.01 %.
Can I mount two tonearms on the Innovation Basic?
Yes, though not from the factory. The second arm is added via the optional Swing Base. This is worthwhile if you want to track mono and stereo separately or run two systems with different character in parallel. We'll mount and align both arms for you.
What distinguishes the Innovation Basic from the Innovation Compact?
Mainly mass and platter. The Basic weighs around 8 kilograms and has a 40 mm platter, the Compact around 12 kilograms and 70 mm, and it's built a bit taller. Magnetic bearing, 24-volt motor and optical speed control are shared by both turntables, as are the three speeds and the two-arm option.
Which speeds does the Innovation Basic play?
33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, switchable by button. That makes shellac transfers possible alongside LP and single, provided you use a matching cartridge with a wider stylus for that. Talk to us before you track old records with the wrong diamond.
Why buy the Innovation Basic from HD Zürisee?
Because a turntable without arm and cartridge is only half the job. We combine, mount and align, and we'll tell you honestly which level of the Innovation range fits your room. Call us or write to us, we'll take the time for it.
