The Canton InWall 865 is a passive two-way in-wall speaker for wall and ceiling installation with a 16.5 cm aluminium woofer, a pivoting tweeter and switchable treble level adjustment.

These two adjustment options are exactly what make it the pragmatist of the series. Because the installation spot is rarely where the acoustics would want it – it's where the space, the joists and the framing allow it. The 865 doesn't hold that against you.

Why the InWall 865?

Because you can adapt it to the room instead of the other way around. The tweeter pivots toward the listening zone, and its level adjusts in steps – that rescues installation spots where a fixed speaker would sound either shrill or dull. Add to that 120 watts of music power handling and 87.5 dB sensitivity: enough reserve so that even a normal-sized living room is not just filled with sound but properly carried.

What you hear

A clear, well-focused sound image that can be aimed. Vocals stand cleanly, detail is preserved, and the 16.5 cm woofer delivers enough foundation from 45 Hz for everyday music. At the top end, the frequency response reaches up to 40 kHz – open, without becoming fatiguing.

Who is the InWall 865 suited to?

For living, dining and work spaces where no cabinet is allowed to be visible, but sound quality still matters. It also sits right as an unobtrusive surround pair in a home cinema. Straight talk: it's no bass miracle – for cinema impact a subwoofer is needed, as with any in-wall speaker of this size. And if you want to make an entire living room front invisible, the larger InWall 989 is the more honest suggestion.

Our verdict

The most flexible of the three InWall classics. It forgives installation spots where other speakers would take offence, while staying remarkably coherent. Straight talk to close: half the battle is the installation – wall construction, cutout and damping decide more than the spec sheet. That's exactly why we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil look at the installation spot before any drilling starts.

Frequently asked questions

How big does the wall cutout for the InWall 865 need to be?

The cutout measures 198 × 294 mm, the installation depth 85 mm, and the maximum wall thickness 40 mm. The visible outer dimensions are 236 × 330 mm. Before cutting, locate the studs, electrical and water lines – Mauri, our technician, does this as part of the site survey.

What does the pivoting tweeter do for you?

It can be turned toward the listening position, so the treble reaches you where you sit – even if the installation spot ends up off to one side. You can also switch the treble level to compensate for a hard or heavily damped room acoustic. Two simple adjustments, a noticeable difference.

Does the InWall 865 fit in a solid wall?

Yes, but not without preparation. In stud framing or a lining wall it sits directly in the cavity. In brick or concrete, a recessed niche or the optional ER 6 mounting frame is needed. Tell us how your wall is built, and we'll plan the installation.

Is the InWall 865 suitable for a kitchen or bathroom?

Yes for the kitchen, only with limitations in the bathroom. The 865 isn't a certified moisture-resistant speaker, but it holds up in practice in a well-ventilated bathroom outside the splash zone. For wellness areas, saunas or outdoor installation, a moisture-resistant model is the better choice – we'll point you to suitable ones.

Why buy the Canton InWall 865 at HD Zürisee?

Because with in-wall speakers, advice comes before the purchase: wall construction, cutout, cable routing and amplifier choice all hang together. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil work that out with you, supply the matching rest of the system, and send Mauri for the installation. Get in touch by phone, email or WhatsApp.
