The Canton InCeiling P4-16 is the 16-ohm version of the compact P4 ceiling speaker, built for installations where several speakers hang in parallel on one amplifier channel.

The "16" in the name stands for exactly one number: 16 ohms nominal impedance instead of the usual 8. Mechanically and acoustically it's the twin of the P4 – same 135 mm chassis, same 150 mm cutout, same 74 mm installation depth.

Why the InCeiling P4-16?

Because wiring speakers in parallel halves the impedance, and amplifiers don't like that. Four 8-ohm speakers in parallel come out to 2 ohms – the point at which most power amplifiers' protection circuits step in. Four P4-16s in parallel land at a comfortable 4 ohms instead. That's exactly why Canton builds this variant: for area coverage in hotel lobbies, restaurants, conference rooms – and for large residential installations where many zones hang off just a few channels.

What you get

The same clear, compact sound as the standard P4, just electrically designed differently: same chassis, same frequency range from 50 Hz, same 50 watts nominal power handling. At identical voltage, a higher-impedance version naturally plays quieter – which in practice hardly matters, since you're running several of them anyway and sizing the amplifier accordingly.

Who is the InCeiling P4-16 suited for?

For fixed installations with many speakers on few channels, planned by someone who works out the total impedance. Straight talk: for a single pair in one room it's the wrong choice – take the normal 8-ohm P4 there and get more level out of the same amplifier. If you're not sure which variant your project needs, better to ask once too often beforehand.

Our verdict

A specialist, not an all-rounder – and irreplaceable in its niche. When an area needs even coverage and the channel count is limited, the P4-16 solves the problem cleanly on the speaker side instead of expensively on the amplifier side. We work out the wiring beforehand at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, before anyone cuts into the first ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 16 in the name stand for?

16 ohms nominal impedance. The normal InCeiling P4 is conventionally designed for 8 ohms, the P4-16 for double that. That keeps the total impedance amplifier-friendly even when several speakers hang in parallel on one channel. All mechanical dimensions are identical to the P4.

How many P4-16s can I put on one amplifier channel?

By the numbers, two in parallel give 8 ohms, four give 4 ohms, eight give 2 ohms. Up to four is uncritical for most stable power amplifiers, beyond that it gets tricky. What matters is your amplifier's power and impedance stability – we're happy to work that out for you.

What ceiling cutout does it need, and can it go in the bathroom?

The cutout is 150 mm at 74 mm installation depth, the trim covers 177 mm, the ceiling panel can be up to 40 mm thick. A back chamber is optional, but mandatory under fire-protection regulations. It isn't approved for moisture rooms or outdoor areas – that's where the P6 Outdoor belongs.

Does the P4-16 sound different from the regular P4?

Acoustically it's the same speaker: same chassis, same frequency range, same power handling. Only the electrical design differs. Canton doesn't state a separate sensitivity figure for the 16-ohm version; at the same voltage, a higher-impedance version fundamentally plays quieter.

Why buy the Canton InCeiling P4-16 from HD Zürisee?

Because multi-speaker installations fail on the wiring, not on the speaker. We size impedance, cable gauges and amplifier power as a whole before you order – with experience from around three decades of installation work. Call us or send us your room list.
