The Canton InCeiling 845 is a round in-ceiling speaker with a coaxial driver, supplied as a pair, that's set directly into the ceiling without an enclosure of its own.

Free Air is the principle at work: the speaker uses the cavity above the ceiling as its volume. You paint the magnetically held front grille in your ceiling colour – after that, you'll need to already know where it is to find it.

Why the InCeiling 845?

Because with a 150 mm cutout and just 75 mm of installation depth, it fits almost anywhere there's a suspended ceiling or drywall lining – it's rated for up to 40 mm ceiling thickness. The 25 mm aluminium tweeter sits coaxially inside the 135 mm woofer/midrange and can be pivoted. That lets you aim it at the listening zone even when the cutout, for structural reasons, isn't exactly where you'd like it. The switchable treble level adjustment additionally lets you compensate for whether the room is hard-surfaced or damped.

What you hear

A widely dispersed, unobtrusive sound image that fills the room rather than serving a single seating spot. The 845 reaches down to 50 Hz – exactly the right amount for a kitchen, hallway, bedroom or a multiroom zone. Vocals stay intelligible, and the aluminium dome keeps the treble open up to 40 kHz without becoming harsh.

Who is the InCeiling 845 suited to?

For anyone who wants everyday music without a cabinet in view – and for shallow ceilings where the larger models simply won't fit. Straight talk: with 86.5 dB sensitivity and 50 W nominal power handling, the 845 is no party speaker, and for critical stereo listening at the sweet spot, this entire category is the wrong choice. Anyone expecting that is better served by floorstanding speakers.

Our verdict

The unobtrusive entry point into Canton's ceiling world: small cutout, shallow depth, clean sound for its purpose. If you want to fill several zones with invisible sound without tearing open half your ceilings, the 845 is the pragmatic choice. Honestly – most rooms need exactly that and not a centimetre more.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do I need in the ceiling for the InCeiling 845?

You need a round cutout 150 mm in diameter with 75 mm of free depth behind it. The visible outer diameter is 190 mm, and ceiling thickness may be up to 40 mm. That means the 845 fits into almost any suspended ceiling or drywall lining. For concrete ceilings, we'll plan an alternative with you.

Does the InCeiling 845 need a back box or damping?

Not strictly – the 845 works on the Free Air principle and uses the ceiling cavity as its volume. Loose damping wool over the driver does calm resonances, though, and stops sound from travelling into the room above. Mauri, our technician, will tell you during planning where a real back box makes sense.

Can the treble be adapted to the room?

Yes. The 845 has a switchable treble level adjustment that lets you match the dome to hard or heavily damped rooms. The 25 mm tweeter can also be pivoted and aimed at the listening zone. That way you can also compensate for an installation spot that isn't structurally ideal.

Can the InCeiling 845 go in the bathroom?

Yes, with one restriction. Canton explicitly approves its ceiling and wall speakers for rooms with higher humidity, but recommends not mounting them directly above a shower or bathtub. We plan the installation spot so the speaker sits outside the direct splash zone while still sounding good.

Is the InCeiling 845 supplied individually or as a pair?

With us, you get the 845 as a pair, i.e. two speakers in one delivery. Canton lists the model in its catalogue as a single unit, but in practice you need at least two for sensible sound coverage anyway. For larger zones, we'll plan four or more units with you.

Why buy the Canton InCeiling 845 at HD Zürisee?

Because with ceiling speakers, planning decides the result: quantity, spacing, amplifier, cable routing. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil work that out for you, instead of simply selling you two boxes. Mauri takes care of the on-site installation on request. Call us or write to us.

Goes well with

You'll find the drive electronics for your zones among the amplifiers, and the clean connection among the speaker cables. More invisible solutions are shown by the in-wall speakers and the wall speakers, and anyone wanting more foundation can add a subwoofer.
