The Canton GLE 70 S2 is a 2.5-way floorstanding speaker with a rear-firing bass reflex port that packs a complete floorstander's worth of volume into a 19-centimetre-wide front.

In White, the column becomes almost a piece of furniture: light, calm, unobtrusive. Underneath work two 174 mm drivers with Aluminum Titanium Black cones and a 25 mm aluminium dome with integrated waveguide. Both woofers support the foundation, but only the upper one continues playing up to 300 Hz; from 3,200 Hz the dome takes over. A complete pair is supplied.

Why the Canton GLE 70 S2?

Because a bookshelf speaker always loses out on one point: enclosure volume. The GLE 70 S2 puts a 95-centimetre column on a footprint of just 19 by 28 centimetres – less floor space than a side table needs, but enough air inside for a low cutoff frequency of 25 Hz. Add to that a sensitivity of 89.5 dB at 4 to 8 ohms: it doesn't demand a powerhouse, just a clean-playing amplifier. And because the reflex port fires rearward, you can fine-tune the bass via wall distance – a control you don't have to pay extra for.

What you hear

A tuning that doesn't want to draw attention to itself. Vocals stay slim and centred, cymbals have room to breathe upward – the frequency range extends up to 40,000 Hz – and the bass has more substance than a 19 cm front would suggest, without laying it on thick. Coming from a compact speaker, you first notice the difference not in level but in composure: the music sits more calmly in the room, because the foundation no longer has to be worked for.

Who is the Canton GLE 70 S2 suited to?

Straight talk: for rooms between about 10 and 25 square metres, and for anyone for whom a wide floorstander is simply too much furniture. If you want to regularly fill an open living space at cinema levels, you're better off with the GLE 80 S2 or GLE 90 S2 – the 70 is deliberately the restrained solution, not the powerhouse. And if you want a dedicated midrange driver, you'll only find it starting with the 80. But as a slim stereo foundation, in a home office, or as the front of a compact home cinema, the white version is exactly right.

Our verdict

Honestly: the GLE 70 S2 is no show speaker, but a workhorse with good manners – and in White, the variant most likely to be welcomed at home. fairaudio credited it in its test with a "balanced, neutral tuning with somewhat firmer bass" and "first-class resolution for this price class" (fairaudio, 02.01.2026, Elmar Salmutter). At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll give you our honest read on whether the 70 is up to your room or whether one size up would be the smarter investment.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Canton GLE 70 S2 in White supplied as a pair?

Yes, you get two floorstanding speakers, i.e. a complete stereo pair. Each cabinet comes with its magnetically attached fabric cover and instructions, so you don't need a second order. All the figures on this page refer to the pair, never to a single column.

Is the GLE 70 S2 bi-wiring capable?

No. Canton fits a simple single-wiring screw terminal that accepts banana plugs. In practice, this is no drawback: a solid speaker cable achieves considerably more here than double cabling. If you're unsure which cross-section suits your cable length, just let us know.

Does the GLE 70 S2 come with spikes?

No, Canton doesn't include spikes with the GLE 70 S2. The speaker stands on integrated feet that work reliably on parquet, laminate and tile. On deep-pile carpet, suitable coupling accessories are worthwhile – we're happy to work out with you which solution makes sense.

How much wall clearance does the GLE 70 S2 need?

Because the reflex port fires rearward, it wants some air: 20 to 40 centimetres from the back wall is a good starting point. Moved closer, the bass gains quantity but loses definition. Feel free to use this as a tool – a few centimetres make an audible difference.

Does the GLE 70 S2 in White also work for home cinema?

Yes, as a front pair in a compact set it works well. Complement it with the GLE 50 Center S2 for dialogue and a subwoofer for low-end foundation, and the tonal colour stays consistent across all channels. The white finish is available across the whole GLE S2 series.

Why buy the Canton GLE 70 S2 at HD Zürisee?

Because here, someone also tells you when the smaller cabinet is the right one. Our experienced team knows the GLE S2 series from everyday use, thinks through amplifier, cabling and placement right alongside it, delivers your pair to your home, and stays reachable with our own technician for installation and service.

Goes well with

A matching integrated amplifier, decent speaker cable and – once film joins the mix – a centre speaker plus subwoofer. More models can be found among the floorstanding speakers.
