The Canton GLE 70 S2 is a 2.5-way floorstanding speaker, designed as the slimmest floorstanding model in the GLE S2 series for small to medium rooms.
Two 174 mm ATB drivers and a 25 mm aluminium dome with waveguide split the work unevenly: the lower driver plays bass exclusively, the upper one additionally handles the midrange. This increases the effective cone area in the foundation without vocals getting lost in the mix. The bass reflex port fires rearward. A complete pair in Black is supplied.
Why the Canton GLE 70 S2?
Because it brings floorstander physics into a footprint that shouldn't really allow for floorstanders. 19 centimetres of front, 95 centimetres of height, 28 centimetres of depth – that's less floor space than a side table, but an enclosure volume that any bookshelf speaker can only dream of. That's exactly where the low cutoff frequency of 25 Hz comes from, something no compact speaker of this size delivers. A sensitivity of 89.5 dB also makes it undemanding: it doesn't want an expensive amplifier, it wants a clean one. In Black, the slim column also reliably fades into the background – handy when not everyone at home is equally thrilled about new gear.

Who is the Canton GLE 70 S2 suited to?
Straight talk: the GLE 70 S2 belongs in rooms of about 10 to 25 m² – normal-sized living rooms, home offices, music corners. If you want to fill a large open area or regularly run party levels, go straight for the GLE 80 or 90; the 70 is deliberately the restrained solution, not the powerhouse. If you want a dedicated midrange driver, the 80 is the right choice. But as a slim stereo foundation or as the front of a compact home cinema, the 70 is exactly the right pick.
Our verdict
Slim doesn't mean thin here: the GLE 70 S2 extracts a surprising amount of foundation from a small footprint while staying pleasantly unfussy. The trade press sees it the same way – fairaudio credited it with a "balanced, neutral tuning" and "first-class resolution for this price class" (fairaudio, 02.01.2026, Elmar Salmutter). At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll give you an honest read on whether the 70 does justice to your room or whether stepping up to the next size is worthwhile, and match amplifier and placement accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Canton GLE 70 S2 supplied as a pair?
Yes, you get two floorstanding speakers, i.e. a complete stereo pair. Each cabinet comes with its magnetic fabric cover and the instructions. So you don't have to order twice, and your set is complete right away. The figures on this page always refer to the pair.
What does 2.5-way mean for the GLE 70 S2?
Both 174 mm drivers handle the bass, but only the upper one also plays the midrange. This doubles the effective cone area in the low end without needing a third driver. For such a slim cabinet, this is the cleverest route to substantial bass.
What room size suits the GLE 70 S2?
Best for rooms of about 10 to 25 square metres. There, it plays in a balanced way with enough foundation, without overwhelming the room. In very large or open living areas it reaches its limits – then the GLE 80 S2 or GLE 90 S2 are the more powerful alternatives.
How far from the wall does the GLE 70 S2 need to be?
The bass reflex port fires rearward, so it needs some air behind it. As a rule of thumb, around 20 to 40 centimetres of wall clearance is a good starting point; right against the wall, the bass quickly gets thick. Fine-tuning happens in the room anyway, and we're happy to help with that.
Is the GLE 70 S2 easy to drive?
Yes. With 89.5 dB sensitivity and 4 to 8 ohms impedance, it's easy-going and copes very well even with moderate amplifier power. A solid stereo or AV amplifier is entirely sufficient. Which partner suits your room best, we'll work out together.
Why buy the Canton GLE 70 S2 at HD Zürisee?
Because with slim floorstanders in particular, placement and amplifier decide the outcome – and that takes experience rather than brochure knowledge. We know the GLE series from daily practice, give you open advice on room, source and cabling, deliver your pair, and take care of service with our own technician.
