The AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 is a belt-driven high-end turntable with its own 10-inch tonearm – without cartridge and without an integrated phono stage.

The large turntable of the Rotation series from Malsch in Baden. Where the R 2.3 MK2 already convinces, the R 5.3 MK2 raises the bar in every discipline: the Elipso Centric Belt Drive routes the belt over a passive deflection pulley onto the sub-platter, so that virtually no tilting moment arises on the platter axis. Add a 60 mm HDF composite plinth with a fully bonded aluminum cover, a 5 kg acrylic platter on an aluminum sub-platter, and around 17 kg total mass that nips vibrations in the bud.

Why the Rotation R 5.3 MK2?

Because it's built for quietness without compromise. The 10-inch tonearm made of polished aluminum is gimbal-mounted and height-adjustable, so the vertical tracking angle can be set cleanly to match the chosen cartridge. The look-forward servo control keeps the speed surgically precise, and the external power supply keeps motor interference out of the signal path. Compared with the first series, the MK2 mainly brought freely adjustable RGB platter lighting instead of the fixed blue LED – complete with a remote control for color and brightness. Too playful? Switch it off, and pure engineering remains.

What you get

A reference turntable that's ready to go in about a quarter of an hour: level the chassis, insert the aluminum sub-platter, fit the belt, set the tracking force. Anti-skating weight, dust cover, external power supply and the remote control for the lighting are included, and the counterweight covers cartridges from 6 to 16 g. You choose the cartridge and phono stage freely – or have AVM mount and adjust the MC cartridge Ortofon Cadenza AVM.3 Black at the factory. This version comes in black.

Who is the Rotation R 5.3 MK2 for?

Be honest: the R 5.3 MK2 is for vinyl enthusiasts who want a turntable for life and are willing to invest accordingly in cartridge and phono stage. Anyone who only occasionally spins a record will be happier with the smaller R 2.3 MK2. Anyone wanting the maximum in quietness, precision and substance, on the other hand, finds here one of the best turntables in its class.

Our verdict

17 kilos that you set down once and then don't question for decades. The R 5.3 MK2 combines manufactory build with operation that puts nobody off – and on top of that, it looks like someone actually thought it through. The real work lies in matching cartridge and phono stage.

What the trade press says: "The AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 embodies uncomplicated plug'n'play and high end in harmonious accord – not only for generation Z." – Hans von Draminski, FIDELITY online, 22.03.2024

Frequently asked questions

Does the AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 come with a cartridge?

No. The R 5.3 MK2 ships from the factory without a cartridge – you have a free choice of system. The included counterweight fits 6 to 16 g, so heavy MC cartridges can be mounted too. On request, AVM delivers the turntable with the MC cartridge Ortofon Cadenza AVM.3 Black mounted at the factory.

What's different about the MK2 compared to the first R 5.3?

The mechanics stayed essentially the same, but the controls were expanded: instead of the fixed blue-lit LED, there's now an RGB LED strip under the platter whose color and brightness you set via the included remote control – including switching it off. Drive, tonearm, plinth and mass correspond to the proven first series.

Do I need a phono preamplifier for the Rotation R 5.3 MK2?

Yes. The R 5.3 MK2 has no integrated phono stage and outputs the signal unamplified via RCA. Between turntable and amplifier, you therefore need a phono preamplifier or an amplifier with a phono input. AVM itself builds a suitable stage with the AVM30 PH 30.3; the Ovation PH 8.3 can also power the Rotation via its 15-volt jack.

Is the drive a belt or a direct drive?

A belt drive. AVM calls it Elipso Centric Belt Drive: the belt runs over a passive deflection pulley onto the sub-platter, so that virtually no tilting moment arises on the platter axis. The motor is powered by an external 15-volt supply, and a look-forward servo control keeps the speed stable.

What's the difference between the R 5.3 MK2 and the R 2.3 MK2?

The R 5.3 MK2 is the flagship: 10-inch tonearm with VTA adjustment instead of 9 inches, Elipso Centric Belt Drive instead of a simple belt drive, a 60 mm instead of 37 mm plinth, a 5 kg acrylic platter on an aluminum sub-platter instead of 3.5 kg, and 17 instead of 12 kg total mass. Plus a separate anti-skating weight and a counterweight for cartridges up to 16 instead of 14 g.
