The AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 is a belt-driven high-end turntable with its own 10-inch tonearm – without cartridge and without a built-in phono stage.

Cellini Chrome is AVM's Sunday best: high-gloss chrome-plated surfaces on the largest deck in the Rotation series, from Malsch in Baden. Underneath, the serious engineering is unchanged – the Elipso Centric Belt Drive runs the belt over a passive idler pulley onto the sub-platter, so that virtually no tilting moment develops in the platter axis. Add to that a 60 mm thick HDF composite plinth with a fully bonded aluminium cover, a 5 kg acrylic platter on an aluminium sub-platter, and a total mass of around 17 kg.

Why the Rotation R 5.3 MK2?

Because quietness here is no accident, but a design principle. The 10-inch tonearm in polished aluminium runs on gimbal bearings and is height-adjustable, so the vertical tracking angle fits any cartridge. The Look-Forward servo control keeps the speed stable, and the external power supply keeps motor noise out of the signal path. Compared with the first series, the MK2 adds freely adjustable RGB platter lighting instead of the fixed blue LED – you control colour and brightness with the included remote, and you can switch it off completely too.

What you get

A turntable that's set up in a good quarter of an hour: level the chassis, fit the aluminium sub-platter, place the belt, set the tracking force. Anti-skating weight, dust cover, external power supply and the lighting remote are included, and the counterweight covers cartridges from 6 to 16 g. You choose the cartridge and phono stage yourself – or have AVM factory-fit and align the Ortofon Cadenza AVM.3 Black MC cartridge. This version comes in Cellini Chrome.

Who is the Rotation R 5.3 MK2 for?

Plain talk: for vinyl listeners looking for a turntable for life – and to whom presence matters just as much as the measurements. The chrome version wants to be seen; if you prefer understated, go for black or silver. If you only put on a record now and then, you're better served by the smaller R 2.3 MK2. And if you want maximum quietness, precision and substance, this is exactly the right place.

Our verdict

A chrome grand piano with a tonearm – and underneath, one of the quietest turntables in its class. The R 5.3 MK2 combines manufacture-quality build with operation that puts no one off. The real work lies in matching cartridge and phono stage, and we're happy to make that our job.

What the trade press says: “The AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 embodies uncomplicated plug'n'play and high end in harmonious agreement – not just for Generation Z.” – Hans von Draminski, FIDELITY online, 22 March 2024

Frequently asked questions

Does the AVM Rotation R 5.3 MK2 come with a cartridge?

No. The R 5.3 MK2 comes from the factory without a cartridge – you choose the system yourself. The included counterweight covers 6 to 16 g, so even heavy MC cartridges can be fitted. On request, AVM supplies the deck with the Ortofon Cadenza AVM.3 Black MC cartridge factory-fitted and aligned.

What's different about the MK2 compared with the first R 5.3?

The mechanics stayed essentially unchanged, but the controls were expanded: under the platter, instead of the fixed blue LED, there's now an RGB LED strip whose colour and brightness you set via the included remote – including switching it off. Drive, tonearm, plinth and total mass match the proven first series.

Do I need a phono preamp for the Rotation R 5.3 MK2?

Yes. There's no built-in phono stage, so the signal leaves the deck unamplified via RCA. You therefore need a phono preamp or an amplifier with a phono input between the turntable and the amplifier. AVM itself offers a matching stage with the AVM30 PH 30.3; the Ovation PH 8.3 even supplies the Rotation with power via its 15-volt socket.

Is the drive belt-driven or direct-driven?

Belt-driven. AVM calls it Elipso Centric Belt Drive: the belt runs over a passive idler pulley onto the sub-platter, so virtually no tilting moment develops in the platter axis. The motor is powered by an external 15-volt supply, and a Look-Forward servo control keeps the speed stable.

What's the difference between the R 5.3 MK2 and the R 2.3 MK2?

The R 5.3 MK2 is the flagship: a 10-inch tonearm with VTA adjustment instead of 9 inches, Elipso Centric Belt Drive instead of a simple belt drive, a 60 mm instead of 37 mm plinth, a 5 kg acrylic platter on an aluminium sub-platter instead of 3.5 kg, and 17 instead of 12 kg total mass. Plus a separate anti-skating weight and a counterweight for cartridges up to 16 instead of 14 g.
