The AVM Ovation SA 8.3 is a single-ended stereo power amplifier with a tube input stage and a MOS-FET output stage, delivering over 2 × 420 watts at 4 ohms.
A power amplifier has exactly one job: turning the preamplifier's signal into power. The SA 8.3 does this in a rigorous dual-mono design, tipping the scales at 42 kilograms – a unit you don't reposition twice, you place it right once.
Why the Ovation SA 8.3?
Because two design philosophies come together here. Ahead of the power amplifier sits a fully balanced input stage with AVM's own 803-T tube technology: two specially made double triodes that lend the signal warmth and smoothness. Behind it, 24 high-current MOS-FETs per channel take over in single-ended circuitry. AVM states over 2 × 230 watts at 8 ohms, over 2 × 420 watts at 4 ohms and over 2 × 700 watts at 2 ohms for it – figures that halve cleanly as the impedance does. Power comes from two 1000 VA toroidal transformers in a true dual-mono design, plus 200,000 microfarads of reservoir capacitance per channel, mounted directly on the output stage boards and about as close to the action as it gets. Short paths, large reserves – the rest is music.
What you get
A power amplifier with one RCA input on solid, gold-plated copper sockets and one XLR input – both are available, but only one is ever used –, plus the transparent Ovation glass lid that keeps the inner workings visible. An automatic on/off function, an AIR trigger with a trigger input from +5 to +20 volts and a USB port for software updates are also included. A handheld remote isn't included – the SA 8.3 doesn't control volume, it follows the preamplifier. In this finish, it's delivered with a black anodised aluminium front.
Who is the Ovation SA 8.3 right for?
Plain talk: the SA 8.3 is a pure power amplifier – no volume control, no sources, no streaming. It needs a preamplifier such as the Ovation PA 8.3, SD 8.3 or MP 8.3, and speakers that can make something of this power. Anyone looking for a compact all-in-one solution is in the wrong place. But anyone building an uncompromising pre-/power-amp concept, who values tube warmth ahead of transistor power and has a rack that can bear 42 kilograms, will find one of the most assured power amplifiers in its class.
Our verdict
The SA 8.3 isn't simply the bigger SA 6.3, it's the other idea – and the more powerful one at that: roughly a fifth more power at 4 ohms, a stated 2 ohm value, a double power supply, double the weight and, of course, the tube at the input. What ultimately stands out is less the loudness than the composure – and that slight warmth transistors alone rarely manage. Once you've had that in your chain, you're reluctant to go back.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a preamplifier for the AVM Ovation SA 8.3?
Yes. The SA 8.3 is a pure power amplifier with no volume control and no source inputs. It's run from a preamplifier, such as the AVM Ovation PA 8.3, the SD 8.3 or the MP 8.3, connected via RCA or XLR. Both inputs can be used but only alternatively, not at the same time.
What's the difference between the SA 8.3 and the SA 6.3?
Power and concept. AVM states over 2 × 230 watts at 8 ohms, over 2 × 420 watts at 4 ohms and over 2 × 700 watts at 2 ohms for the SA 8.3, while the SA 6.3 delivers 2 × 200 and 2 × 350 watts respectively. The 8.3 also adds the tube input stage with 803-T double triodes, a dual-mono power supply, 200,000 µF per channel and 24 instead of 20 MOS-FETs – at 42 instead of 21 kilograms.
Can the AVM Ovation SA 8.3 be bridged to mono?
No. Bridge mode isn't described in the manual and isn't provided by AVM. Anyone wanting true mono operation should get the Ovation MA 8.3 mono power amplifiers – according to the manual, these are designed as bridged power amplifiers. So at AVM, the path to more power leads via separate monoblocks.
Is a remote control included with the SA 8.3?
No. According to the manual, the scope of delivery comprises the power amplifier, mains cable and 3.5 mm trigger plug. It's operated on the unit or automatically via the AIR trigger, which wakes the power amplifier together with the preamplifier. The SA 8.3 has no volume control that would need a remote.
