AVM Ovation SA 8.3 LITE Stereo Power Amplifier, Silver

The AVM Ovation SA 8.3 LITE in silver is a Class A/B stereo power amplifier with MOSFET technology that delivers 200 watts into 8 ohms and 390 watts into 4 ohms – a high-performance powerhouse that stays remarkably tidy at 43 × 25 × 42 cm.

AVM builds the Ovation power amplifiers by hand in Malsch, and the LITE translates the signature of the large SA 8.3 into a somewhat more compact format. In silver it looks bright and businesslike – a unit that doesn't look out of place next to other silver components.

Why the AVM Ovation SA 8.3 LITE?

Because reserves count here: 24 MOSFET transistors per channel deliver currents of up to 60 amperes, the signal path is fully DC-coupled and the input stage works with transistor technology. A 1,000 VA toroidal transformer and two separate power supplies feed the output stages and the processor unit independently, and each channel has 136,000 µF of reservoir capacitance – enough for peaks of over 450 watts into 8 ohms and 900 watts into 4 ohms.

What you get

A power amplifier offering both XLR and RCA inputs and therefore suiting practically any preamplifier. The chassis is made of high-quality aluminium, the display is dimmable and high-contrast, and a remote control is included. The LITE is delivered in a sturdy AVM flight case – handy for transport and a clear sign of how seriously AVM takes the unit.

Who is the SA 8.3 LITE suited for – and who not?

Straight talk: for anyone who wants to drive their speakers with plenty of control and who owns or plans a separate preamplifier or streaming preamplifier. It is oversized for small rooms and efficient bookshelf speakers, and if you want an amplifier with input selection and volume control you need an integrated amplifier. At 22 kg and about 43 cm wide, it also wants a solid place to stand.

Our verdict

The SA 8.3 LITE in silver is a power amplifier that doesn't have to show off its strength – it simply has it. If you're building a rack in silver, here is the matching heavyweight. Which preamplifier and speakers suit it, we're happy to discuss with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does the AVM Ovation SA 8.3 LITE deliver?

According to AVM, 200 watts into 8 ohms and 390 watts into 4 ohms, with peaks of over 450 and 900 watts respectively. The data sheet gives maximum output power as 225 watts into 8 ohms, 350 watts into 4 ohms and 500 watts into 2 ohms. Either way, the LITE has reserves for demanding speakers.

Which inputs does the SA 8.3 LITE have?

One balanced XLR and one unbalanced RCA input for both channels. For long cable runs XLR is recommended because of its better immunity to interference. Input sensitivity is 1.35 volts.

How heavy and how big is the power amplifier?

It weighs 22 kilograms and measures 430 × 250 × 420 mm (width × height × depth). Allow for a sturdy rack or sideboard with enough load capacity and air all around, and ideally carry it with two people.

Does the SA 8.3 LITE in silver match units from AVM's Evolution and Ovation series?

Visually yes: the silver aluminium chassis matches the silver finishes of those series. The width of about 43 cm matches the Evolution units; allow for the 25 cm height when planning shelf spacing.
