The AVM Ovation PAS 8.3S is a streaming preamplifier that combines a tube line stage, a phono stage and a complete network front end – with no power amp of its own on board.
If you already own a power amp or monoblocks, or want to buy one specifically, you need a device ahead of it that gathers sources, switches between them and gives them character. That's exactly what the PAS 8.3S in silver does: it's the control centre of the system, not its muscle – and it lets every connected power amp sound as good as it deserves to.
Why the AVM Ovation PAS 8.3S?
The tube line stage with fully analogue, passive volume control is the heart of the unit: it gives the sound warmth and depth without ever feeling sluggish. On the digital side, an ESS Sabre9038 PRO converter with four D/A converters per channel does the work, plus Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect MAX, AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready via the AVM X-Stream Engine. A phono stage with four gain stages for MM and MC is also built in – so vinyl listeners don't need to invest separately. If you've had a box full of adapters and switches between sources and power amp until now, you can finally get rid of it.
What you hear, get and experience
The passive analogue tube control delivers a signal path that doesn't lose substance even at low volume, with a pleasant roundness in the midrange. Network streaming runs stably over LAN or dual-band Wi-Fi, with hi-res and DSD playback up to 384 kHz/32-bit or DSD256 included. The 6.3 mm headphone output lets you enjoy your own collection independently of the connected power amp, and two 12-volt trigger outputs make sure power amps and accessories dutifully switch on with it.
Who is the AVM Ovation PAS 8.3S for?
For anyone who already owns a power amp or wants to specifically combine one with it – an AVM Ovation SA 8.3, for example – and is looking for an equally capable preamp with streaming, phono and tube character. Plain talk: without its own power amp, the PAS 8.3S stays silent; this isn't a compact solution for a quick start. If you're after an all-in-one unit without a separate power amp, you're better off with the AS 8.3S.
Our verdict
AUDIO+stereoplay rated the PAS 8.3S 180 points in a joint test with the SA 8.3 power amp and wrote in issue 06/2026: "AVM's two newest 'remixes' impress not only with remarkable individual performances. It's precisely in teamwork that the combination of the PAS 8.3 S and SA 8.3 is in a class of its own." For us at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, that confirms what we notice ourselves when listening: the PAS 8.3S is one of the most convincing preamps currently bringing streaming, tube character and phono together in one chassis.

Frequently asked questions
Do I necessarily need an AVM power amp for the PAS 8.3S?
No, any power amp with suitable inputs will work. The combination with an AVM Ovation SA 8.3 or MA 8.3 is sonically coherent and has been tested by the trade press, but other high-quality power amps can also be connected without any problem.
Can I connect a turntable directly to the PAS 8.3S?
Yes, the built-in phono stage supports MM and MC cartridges with four selectable gain stages plus adjustable input impedance and capacitance for fine-tuning. You don't need a separate phono preamp for this – the turntable connects directly to the PAS 8.3S.
Is the output level fixed or adjustable?
The PAS 8.3S offers a fixed line-out at 2.5 V and an adjustable pre-out up to 5.4 V, depending on what the connected power amp requires. Volume control is fully analogue and passive via the tube line stage, for a particularly unadulterated, direct signal path with no digital intermediate steps.
Do I need a streaming subscription to use the PAS 8.3S?
No. Internet radio, a connected CD player, USB storage or the built-in phono input all work without any subscription. Qobuz, Tidal and Spotify Connect are an option you can add if you want, but you don't have to in order to enjoy the system.
Can I connect headphones directly to the PAS 8.3S?
Yes, via the 6.3 mm jack with its own Class A/B amplification and low output impedance. That way you can enjoy your music collection in good quality even when the connected power amp and speakers stay completely switched off – handy for late-night listening.
