The AVM Ovation CS 8.3 S is a streaming CD receiver that combines a tube line stage, CD drive, phono input, network streamer, D/A converter and a Class D power amp with 2 × 550 watts in a single chassis.

A whole chain, in other words, that would otherwise be spread across four boxes, three power cords and a tangled mess of cables. The 8.3 S is the reworked new edition of the Ovation CS 8.3 and the flagship of the CS series – here in the classic silver brushed-aluminium chassis.

Why the CS 8.3 S?

Because the “S” stands for freshly engineered technology, not a label. The circuit boards were redesigned, conversion now runs on the S-DAC platform with the ESS ES9038PRO in a double-quad layout as standard – on the CS 8.3 this converter still cost extra – and the power amp steps up from 2 × 500 to 2 × 550 watts at 4 ohms. More important than the extra watts are the connections the CS 8.3 lacks: HDMI ARC, so the TV can run through the system, USB-C instead of USB-B for the computer, a phono input for MM and MC – and a second pair of speaker terminals. The tube line stage itself isn't an S feature: the 8.3 already had it too, along with the tinted viewing window in the lid. It just glowed a fixed red there – on the S you choose the colour yourself.

What you get

Three source worlds in one unit: disc, vinyl and network. The slot-in drive takes CDs and CD-Rs, the phono input can be fully adjusted for MM and MC from the menu, and on the digital side two coaxial and two optical S/PDIF inputs stand ready, rounded out by HDMI ARC, USB-C and USB-A. The network side is handled by the AVM X-Stream Engine with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect MAX, AirPlay 2, Roon, HighResAudio, UPnP and internet radio. Add to that a headphone output with its own Class A/B amp, a volume-controlled XLR output and terminals for two speaker pairs.

Who is the CS 8.3 S for – and who isn't it for?

For music listeners who want uncompromising sound and still a tidy living room. For anyone switching between turntable, CD shelf and streaming service without hunting for three remotes to do it. Honestly: if all you do with it is listen to the radio in passing, you're thoroughly under-using the unit. And if you deliberately build your system from separate preamps and power amps to upgrade piece by piece, you're better served by a different concept.

Our verdict

The best all-in-one AVM currently builds – and a good reason to drop the prejudice that a single chassis can't play at reference level. Which speakers really suit it is the more interesting question; that's exactly what we work out with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

What the trade press says: “Hardly gets more beautiful, powerful or compatible” – HIFI.DE, 03/2026, overall score 9.6 out of 10.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CS 8.3 S still need an amplifier or streamer?

No. A streamer, D/A converter, CD drive, phono preamp and a power amp with 2 × 550 watts at 4 ohms are already built in. All you need is a pair of speakers and a network connection via cable or Wi-Fi – and, if you like, a turntable. It won't take more units than that.

What's the difference between the CS 8.3 S and the CS 8.3?

The 8.3 S brings technology the CS 8.3 lacks: an HDMI ARC input, USB-C instead of USB-B, phono for MM and MC, a second pair of speaker terminals, 2 × 550 instead of 2 × 500 watts at 4 ohms, and DSD256 instead of DSD128. The ES9038PRO is also standard on the S. The unit weighs 15 instead of 13 kilograms.

Is the tube the difference from the CS 8.3?

No. The CS 8.3 also has a tube line stage behind a tinted viewing window – neither is an S-version feature. The only new thing is that the tube's illumination colour can now be freely chosen via the app, instead of glowing a fixed red. The streaming platform is also the same AVM X-Stream Engine on both.

Does the CS 8.3 S replace a CD player?

Yes, it's entirely enough for the silver disc: the slot-in drive plays audio CDs and CD-Rs to the Red Book standard. An extra player becomes unnecessary. That doesn't make it a pure CD player, though – the drive is one source alongside the streamer, phono, HDMI ARC and the digital inputs.

Can I connect headphones to the CS 8.3 S?

Yes. There's a 6.3 mm jack on the front with its own Class A/B headphone amp – not an afterthought, but a serious output stage with up to 9 volts of output voltage. 3.5 mm adapters work, and even high-impedance models get plenty of headroom. We're happy to talk through which headphones suit you.

Does the CS 8.3 S work without a streaming subscription?

Yes. CD, vinyl, TV sound via HDMI ARC, internet radio, podcasts and local files from the network or a USB stick all run without any paid service. A subscription to Qobuz, Spotify or TIDAL is an option, not a requirement – you decide how much streaming you actually want.
