The AVM Ovation CS 8.3 S is a streaming CD receiver that combines a tube line stage, CD drive, phono input, network streamer, D/A converter and a Class D power amp with 2 × 550 watts in a single chassis.
That puts a complete high-end system on your sideboard, without turning it into a stack of boxes. The 8.3 S is the reworked new edition of the Ovation CS 8.3 and the current flagship of the CS series – this version in a black brushed-aluminium chassis.
Why the CS 8.3 S?
Because the “S” isn't just cosmetic. AVM redesigned the circuit boards; the signal path now runs the S-DAC platform with the ESS ES9038PRO in a double-quad layout as standard – on the CS 8.3 this converter was only available as a paid option – and the power amp now delivers 2 × 550 instead of 2 × 500 watts at 4 ohms. On top of that come connections the predecessor didn't have at all: an HDMI ARC input for the TV, USB-C instead of USB-B for the computer, a phono input for MM and MC cartridges, and a second pair of speaker terminals. The tube, on the other hand, is explicitly not a difference – the 8.3 already had a tube line stage behind a tinted viewing window. The only change is that its illumination colour is now freely selectable, instead of glowing a fixed red.
What you get
Everything a stereo system otherwise spreads across four separate boxes. The slot-in drive plays CDs and CD-Rs, the phono input takes a turntable and is set up entirely from the menu instead of fumbling with jumpers in the dark behind the unit. On the digital side there are two coaxial and two optical S/PDIF inputs, plus HDMI ARC, USB-C and USB-A. Streaming runs via the AVM X-Stream Engine with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect MAX, AirPlay 2, Roon, HighResAudio and internet radio. At the front sits a headphone output with its own Class A/B amp, at the back terminals for two speaker pairs and a volume-controlled XLR output for later expansion.
Who is the CS 8.3 S for – and who isn't it for?
For anyone who wants high-end sound but not a living room full of boxes and cables. Equally for vinyl listeners, streamers and CD collectors, because all three sources are on board. Plain talk: if you're only buying this to have Bluetooth music mumbling along in the background, that's like buying a racing bike to wait for the tram – it works, but it hurts the receiver's feelings. And if you deliberately collect separate preamps and power amps to upgrade them individually, you're after a different concept.
Our verdict
The CS 8.3 S is AVM's best all-in-one and a pretty convincing argument against the idea that “all-in-one” inevitably means “compromise”. Anyone who disagrees simply hasn't heard this one yet. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll plan the system around it with you – speakers, placement, cabling.

Frequently asked questions
Does the CS 8.3 S still need an amplifier or streamer?
No. A streamer, D/A converter, CD drive, phono preamp and a power amp with 2 × 550 watts at 4 ohms are already built in. All you need is a pair of speakers and a network connection via cable or Wi-Fi – and, if you like, a turntable. It won't take more units than that.
What's the difference between the CS 8.3 S and the CS 8.3?
The 8.3 S brings technology the CS 8.3 lacks: an HDMI ARC input, USB-C instead of USB-B, phono for MM and MC, a second pair of speaker terminals, 2 × 550 instead of 2 × 500 watts at 4 ohms, and DSD256 instead of DSD128. The 8.3 already had the tube line stage behind the viewing window – the only new thing is its freely selectable illumination colour.
Does the CS 8.3 S play CDs too – and is it a fully-fledged CD player?
Yes, a slot-in drive for audio CDs and CD-Rs sits inside the unit and plays them back in Red Book quality. That makes a separate CD player unnecessary. Conversely, the CS 8.3 S isn't a pure player: it brings along a preamp, power amp, streamer and phono stage too – the drive is just one source among several.
Can I connect a turntable directly?
Yes. The phono input takes MM and MC cartridges and switches between the two. You set gain, capacitance and impedance in the menu or the RC X App, instead of fumbling with jumpers in the dark behind the unit. You don't need a separate phono stage.
Can I connect headphones to the CS 8.3 S?
Yes. There's a 6.3 mm jack on the front with its own Class A/B headphone amp – not an afterthought, but a serious output stage with up to 9 volts of output voltage. 3.5 mm adapters work, and even high-impedance models get plenty of headroom. We're happy to talk through which headphones suit you.
Does the CS 8.3 S work without a streaming subscription?
Yes. CD, vinyl, TV sound via HDMI ARC, internet radio, podcasts and local files from the network or a USB stick all run without any paid service. A subscription to Qobuz, Spotify or TIDAL is an option, not a requirement – you decide how much streaming you actually want.
