The AVM Ovation CS 8.3 S is a streaming CD receiver that combines a tube line stage, CD drive, phono input, network streamer, D/A converter and a Class D power amp with 2 × 550 watts in a single housing.

In the Cellini Chrom finish, there's also the hand-polished, chrome-plated front panel complete with chrome knobs – AVM's highest level of refinement, which finally turns the flagship of the CS series into a piece of furniture. Technically, the Cellini Chrom is identical to the aluminum finishes.

Why the CS 8.3 S?

Because behind the chrome front sits the newly engineered S generation. Newly designed circuit boards, the S-DAC platform with the ESS ES9038PRO in a double-quad layout as standard – on the CS 8.3 this converter was a paid upgrade – DSD256 instead of DSD128, and a power amp that delivers 2 × 550 instead of 2 × 500 watts at 4 ohms. More decisive than the wattage, though, is what the CS 8.3 doesn't offer at all: an HDMI ARC input for the TV, USB-C instead of USB-B, a phono input for MM and MC, and a second pair of speaker terminals. The tube line stage is explicitly not among these innovations – the 8.3 already had that, complete with a tinted viewing window in the lid. On the S, it just no longer glows fixed red, but in the color you set.

What you get

A complete system, packed into a front you look twice at when walking past. The slot-in drive plays CDs and CD-R, the phono input switches between MM and MC and is fully adjusted in the menu. Digitally there are two coaxial and two optical S/PDIF inputs, HDMI ARC, USB-C and USB-A. Streaming runs via the AVM X-Stream Engine with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect MAX, AirPlay 2, Roon, HighResAudio and internet radio. Headphones get their own Class A/B amplifier at the 6.3 mm jack, speakers get two terminal pairs – and for later, a volume-controlled XLR output stands ready.

Who is the CS 8.3 S Cellini Chrom for – and who isn't it for?

For anyone to whom sound and presence matter equally – the chrome front is a deliberate decision, not a coincidence. For vinyl, CD and streaming listeners alike, because all sources sit in the unit. Plain talk: chrome wants to be cared for and shows fingerprints; anyone who operates the unit blind every day is happier with the brushed aluminum front. And anyone who prefers collecting separate preamps and power amps is looking for a different concept anyway.

Our verdict

Technically AVM's best all-in-one, visually the most uncompromising variant of it. Be honest: a unit you enjoy looking at gets switched on more often. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we think through with you which speakers and which placement do justice to this effort.

What the trade press says: "Hardly gets more beautiful, powerful or compatible" – HIFI.DE, 03/2026, overall score 9.6 out of 10 points.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Cellini Chrom finish mean?

Cellini Chrom is AVM's highest level of refinement: a hand-polished and chrome-plated front panel complete with chrome knobs, which AVM builds on request instead of the brushed aluminum front. Technically the unit is identical to the aluminum finishes – the difference lies exclusively in the look and the effort of the finishing work.

Does the CS 8.3 S still need an amplifier, streamer or CD player?

No. A power amp with 2 × 550 watts at 4 ohms, streamer, D/A converter, phono preamp and a slot-in drive for audio CDs are already inside the housing. You just need speakers and a network connection, plus a turntable if needed. It's not a pure CD player, then – the drive is one source among many.

What's the difference between the CS 8.3 S and the CS 8.3?

The 8.3 S brings technology the CS 8.3 lacks: HDMI ARC input, USB-C instead of USB-B, phono for MM and MC, a second pair of speaker terminals, 2 × 550 instead of 2 × 500 watts at 4 ohms, and DSD256 instead of DSD128. It weighs 15 instead of 13 kilograms. Both had the tube behind a viewing window.

Can I connect a turntable directly?

Yes. The phono input accepts MM and MC cartridges and is switched between the two. You set gain, capacitance and impedance in the menu or in the RC X app, instead of fumbling with jumpers behind the unit in the dark. You don't need a separate phono stage.

Can I connect headphones to the CS 8.3 S?

Yes. There's a 6.3 mm jack on the front with its own Class A/B headphone amplifier – not a stopgap, but a seriously engineered output stage with up to 9 volts output. Adapters to 3.5 mm work fine, and even high-impedance models get enough headroom. Which headphones harmonize well, we're happy to discuss with you.

Does the CS 8.3 S also work without a streaming subscription?

Yes. CD, vinyl, TV sound via HDMI ARC, internet radio, podcasts and local files from the network or a USB stick all run without any paid service. A subscription to Qobuz, Spotify or TIDAL is an option, not a requirement – you decide how much streaming you even want.

Goes well with

Speakers that visually keep up suit the chrome front: Floorstanding Speakers or Bookshelf Speakers, for the vinyl side a Turntable with a matching Cartridge – and decent Speaker Cables.
