The AVM Ovation A 6.3 is an integrated amplifier with a transistor preamplifier, combining a Class A/AB MOS-FET power stage and a built-in D/A converter in one chassis.

In silver, it looks classic and uncluttered, almost unassuming in the rack. You wouldn't credit it with 2 × 200 watts until the first loud passage arrives and nothing gets flustered even then.

Why the A 6.3?

The Ovation series is built by hand at AVM in Malsch. Per channel, 20 MOS-FET transistors do the work, fed by a 1000 VA toroidal transformer; up to 180 amps are available. The volume control works fully balanced in 256 steps, which above all keeps quiet levels clean. The result isn't a fireworks display but the kind of composure you only miss once it's gone.

What you get

Source variety with no extra box: the converter processes PCM up to 384 kHz / 32 bit and DSD128 over USB-B, plus two coaxial and two optical digital inputs and Bluetooth. Analogue-wise there's one balanced XLR and four RCA inputs. From the CD player to the TV to the network player, everything connects directly; vinyl runs through an external phono stage. Two switchable speaker pairs, adjustable pre-outs in XLR and RCA, and a fixed line-out for recording round it off.

Who is the A 6.3 suited for – and who isn't it for?

The right choice if you want clear, neutral sound and value an uncluttered setup. If you specifically want the warm tube signature, reach for the A 8.3 with its 803 T tube stage – same power, different character, and externally the same amplifier apart from the model name on the display. And if you want a device that plays Spotify or Qobuz on its own, you'll need a streamer as well: the A 6.3 has no network functions.

Our verdict

Anyone claiming that the smaller model in a series is automatically the compromise hasn't heard the A 6.3 yet. In silver, a timeless staple for the rack, with serious German handcraft behind it. Before you order blind: let's talk briefly about your speakers and your room. The HD Zürisee team in Wädenswil can be reached by phone, email or WhatsApp.

"AVM stands for … a fresh, precise, very uncluttered sound. The A6.3 celebrates it in its purest form." – Holger Biermann, LowBeats, April 2019

Frequently asked questions

Which digital resolutions does the AVM Ovation A 6.3 support?

Via the USB-B interface, the built-in converter processes PCM up to 384 kHz / 32 bit as well as DSD128. The two coaxial and two optical inputs accept common S/PDIF sources, and Bluetooth 4.2 additionally streams wirelessly from a smartphone or tablet. An external converter is therefore usually unnecessary.

Can I run two pairs of speakers on the A 6.3?

Yes. The A 6.3 has two speaker outputs, A and B, which according to the manual can be individually enabled and disabled via the menu. That lets you supply a living room and a secondary room without re-plugging anything. Whether that's worthwhile in your situation depends on the speakers and the cable run – we're happy to look at it with you.

Is the A 6.3 a streaming amplifier?

No. The A 6.3 is a pure integrated amplifier with no network section, no app control and no CD drive. Bluetooth is on board; everything else comes from outside: a streamer connects to the coaxial, optical or USB input, as does a CD player. That keeps the signal path clean and makes later upgrades easier.

Does the Ovation DAC S module fit the A 6.3?

There's no approval for that. AVM lists the DAC module Ovation DAC S for the Ovation models CS, SD and MP of the .3 generation, not for the integrated amplifiers A 6.3 and A 8.3. Their USB and DAC assembly is modular in design, but an upgrade runs through AVM. Simpler: an external D/A converter.

How much warranty does AVM give on the Ovation A 6.3?

Two years of manufacturer's warranty, and with product registration at avm.audio, up to two more years are added – so up to four in total. AVM covers parts and labour; transport costs pass to the owner after six months. We handle the paperwork for a warranty case for you.

Why buy the AVM Ovation A 6.3 in silver from HD Zürisee?

Because the right device depends on the room, the speakers and listening habits – things nobody can judge online at a glance. As an authorised AVM dealer, we give you honest advice, handle the warranty, and have our own technician, Mauri, in house. Get in touch by phone, email or WhatsApp.

Goes well with

The A 6.3 pairs well with upmarket floorstanding speakers or bookshelf speakers, plus decent cables. You add a network source via streamers & network players, and a turntable via a phono preamplifier. For comparison, it's worth a look at all amplifiers.
