Couldn't load pickup availability
The AVM Evolution PH 3.3 is a modular phono preamplifier in pure transistor technology that amplifies MM and MC cartridges and adapts precisely to virtually any pickup system.
It's aimed at vinyl listeners with high-end ambitions who want to get the last ounce of music out of their turntable. Technically, the PH 3.3 borrows heavily from the flagship PH 8.3 – packaged in a screwless, 43 cm wide aluminium chassis that, in this finish, carries a hand-polished chrome front.
Why the PH 3.3?
Because the phono stage determines whether a vinyl system sinks or swims – it's what makes the tiny cartridge signal audible in the first place. The PH 3.3 offers five gain stages, six termination resistances for MC and six capacitance values for MM, plus a switchable subsonic filter, six selectable equalisation curves and RIAA equalisation accurate to ±0.2 dB. Direct presets are available for AVM Cadenza systems by Ortofon. In short: a precise match instead of an off-the-shelf compromise.
What you hear and get
A clean, low-noise, dynamic analogue sound that reveals detail without pushing it at you. Separate RCA inputs for MM and MC, RCA and XLR outputs, a dimmable graphic display with proximity sensor, and a trigger input for integration into a larger system. You handle all settings from the front panel or with the included IR remote – no opening the chassis, no jumper puzzles. And if you want more down the line: a built-in module slot accepts the high-quality phono modules from the larger PH 8.3.
Who is the PH 3.3 for – and who isn't it for?
For anyone with a good turntable who wants a phono stage that grows with them and truly adapts to everything. Plain talk: if you want the characteristic warmth of a tube in the signal path, the sister model PH 5.3 is the right choice – the PH 3.3 has no tube and deliberately goes for the neutral, razor-clean transistor line. And if you only play a record now and then, AVM's range also has leaner solutions.
Our verdict
The PH 3.3 is one of the most adaptable phono stages in its class – maturely tuned and future-proof thanks to its module slot. In Cellini Chrom it becomes a device you deliberately put on display rather than hide away. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we fine-tune it together with you to match your cartridge exactly; the PH 3.3 is also available in black and silver.

Frequently asked questions
Which cartridges does the PH 3.3 suit?
Both MM and MC systems equally, with separate inputs for each. Five gain stages, six MC termination resistances and six MM capacitances let you match it to virtually any pickup system. Ready-made presets are available for AVM Cadenza cartridges by Ortofon for quick setup.
Does the AVM Evolution PH 3.3 have a tube?
No. According to AVM, the PH 3.3 works as a pure transistor device and sounds correspondingly neutral and low-noise. The tube output stage sits in the sister model PH 5.3. All other connection and performance data are identical between the two models – it's purely a matter of taste.
What is the Cellini Chrom finish?
Cellini Chrom is AVM's hand-polished, chrome-plated front panel. Technically, the unit is exactly identical to the aluminium black and silver versions – same inputs, same gain stages, same module slot. The difference is purely visual, and it's considerably less understated.
Can I upgrade the PH 3.3 later?
Yes. The built-in module slot lets you retrofit the high-quality phono modules from the larger PH 8.3. That way you can boost performance step by step without swapping out the whole preamp. Which module is worthwhile depends on your cartridge.
Why buy the PH 3.3 from HD Zürisee?
Because a phono stage only shows its potential once it's matched exactly to the cartridge. We fine-tune it with you, advise on the whole vinyl chain, and handle service through our technician Mauri. As an authorised AVM dealer in Wädenswil, we're here for you – call or write.
