The AVM Evolution CS 5.3 is a streaming integrated amplifier with a built-in CD drive and tube preamp that combines network streaming, ESS conversion, a calibratable MM/MC phono input and 2 × 350 watts of power amp output in one housing.
It's the tube counterpart to the Evolution CS 3.3 – here in a black brushed aluminium housing. Same power, same connections, same streaming; the difference sits in the Tube Line Stage, which gives the sound a warmer, more organic character.
Why the AVM Evolution CS 5.3?
The CS 5.3 is for everyone who wants the complete feature set of the CS 3.3, but with the unmistakable character of a tube preamp on top. 2 × 350 watts at 4 Ω (2 × 180 watts at 8 Ω) drive even large floorstanding speakers effortlessly, and via outputs A and B even two pairs. The tube line stage brings warmth and smoothness to the signal without losing resolution – measured, the preamp's distortion sits below 0.025 % instead of below 0.001 % like its transistor sibling. That small handful of harmonic distortion is exactly the reason some people love tubes in the first place.
The digital section is built on a selected ESS9028PRO in double-quad configuration with four converters per channel, and the X-STREAM Engine streams in high resolution up to DSD256 and PCM 384 kHz/32 bit. The phono stage is calibratable, just as on the CS 3.3. The tube's lighting can be set to blue or red in the menu – or switched off entirely, to taste.
What you get
Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, HighResAudio and Roon run directly, AirPlay 2 and internet radio are built in – no subscription required. Plus balanced XLR and three RCA inputs, HDMI ARC for the TV, coaxial and optical digital, a slot-in CD drive, USB-A for storage media, Bluetooth 5.0 and a headphone output on the front. Control is via the free RC X App; a wireless remote (RC 3 / RC 8 or RC 9 / RC 10) is available as an accessory.
Who is the Evolution CS 5.3 right for – and who isn't it for?
Honestly: the CS 5.3 is for listeners who deliberately want the warmer, somewhat rounder tube sound and are happy to spend a bit more for it. If you prefer a sober, neutral tone, the more affordable Evolution CS 3.3 serves you just as well – you don't get more power here, both models are equally powerful. And for small rooms, the compact Inspiration CS 2.3 remains the leaner choice.
Our verdict
The CS 5.3 doesn't sell more power, but a signature. If you love long listening evenings and want to take the last touch of harshness out of digital recordings, this gives you an all-in-one system with character – CD, streaming, phono and headphones included. You just have to let go of transistor purism for it.

Frequently asked questions
What does the CS 5.3's tube preamp bring?
The Tube Line Stage gives the sound a warmer, somewhat rounder and more organic character – many find it more pleasant over long listening evenings. The CS 5.3 doesn't lose anything in resolution or detail in the process; the manufacturer states the preamp's distortion at below 0.025 %.
What's the difference between the CS 5.3 and the CS 3.3?
Only the preamp. Power (2 × 350 watts at 4 Ω), converter, connections, CD drive and streaming are identical on both – so the CS 5.3 isn't more powerful, just differently tuned: tube instead of transistor, warmer instead of strictly neutral.
Is a remote control included?
No. In the box you'll find the unit, two Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antennas, a power cable and gloves. The CS 5.3 is controlled via the free RC X App for iOS and Android. AVM offers the RC 3 / RC 8 and RC 9 / RC 10 wireless remotes separately as accessories.
Can I connect a turntable?
Yes. Like the CS 3.3, the CS 5.3 also has a calibratable MM/MC phono input, whose load resistance and capacitance can be adjusted precisely to your cartridge – no screwdriver needed, directly via the menu or the app.
