Audio-Technica AT33xMLD MC Cartridge

The Audio-Technica AT33xMLD is a low-output MC cartridge with a bare Microlinear diamond and a duraluminum cantilever, combining fine resolution with a warm, powerful fundamental tone.

It comes from the thoroughly reworked AT33x series – the first major overhaul in years – and it's the warm one of the bunch. It feels most at home with pressings from the golden decades of jazz and rock.

Why the AT33xMLD?

The bare Microlinear grind traces the groove more finely than an elliptical stylus and gets closer to what the cutting stylus originally left behind. The tapered duraluminum cantilever keeps the highs silky rather than sharp. Add PCOCC copper coils, a neodymium magnet with a Permendur yoke, and a newly developed piano-wire suspension that gives the cartridge its slightly firmer compliance and, with it, its substantial, full tone. Handmade in Japan – you won't find that on any spec sheet, but you can hear it.

Who's the AT33xMLD for – and who isn't it for?

The first choice for anyone who wants to hear their vintage pressings with body and warmth without giving up detail. Bottom line: with a dynamic compliance of 6 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyn, it's one of the firmer-suspended cartridges and wants a medium- to heavyweight tonearm – on a very light arm it turns restless. And the stylus is fixed in place: replacement runs through Audio-Technica's paid MC exchange program. If you want to swap styli yourself, an MM cartridge suits you better.

xMLD, xMLB, or xEN – which one fits?

The xMLD and xMLB share the bare Microlinear diamond and differ in the cantilever: duraluminum on the xMLD, boron on the xMLB, which as a result plays a touch tighter and more analytical. The AT33xEN works with a bare elliptical diamond. For rock and jazz from the fifties through the seventies, the xMLD is usually the more fitting choice.

Frequently asked questions

What phono input does the AT33xMLD need?

An MC input or a step-up transformer. With 0.4 mV output, the AT33xMLD is a low-output MC and stays noticeably too quiet on a plain MM input. Audio-Technica recommends a load impedance of at least 100 ohms – most MC stages cover that. When in doubt, check your phono stage's manual.

What does a "bare" Microlinear diamond mean?

The entire tip is made of diamond instead of a layer bonded onto a carrier shaft. That noticeably lowers the moving mass, so the stylus follows the groove faster and more precisely. Combined with the narrow Microlinear grind (2.2 × 0.12 mil), that pulls more information out of the groove, especially near the inner grooves.

What sets the AT33xMLD apart from the AT33xMLB and the AT33xEN?

The cantilever and the grind. The xMLD and xMLB share the bare Microlinear diamond; the xMLD carries it on duraluminum, the xMLB on boron – which sounds a touch tighter and more analytical. The AT33xEN works with a bare elliptical diamond. For warm vintage rock and jazz, the xMLD is usually the more fitting choice.

Does the AT33xMLD fit any tonearm?

Not just any. With a dynamic compliance of 6 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz and 10.1 g of its own weight, it's one of the firmer-suspended cartridges and wants a medium- to heavyweight tonearm. On very light arms, the resonance frequency ends up too high – then it sounds restless instead of rich.

Can I replace the stylus myself?

No. On the AT33xMLD, the stylus is fixed in place and not available as a replaceable tip. If it's worn, replacement runs through Audio-Technica's paid MC exchange program. If you want to swap styli yourself on a regular basis, an MM cartridge is simply the more relaxed way to go – we can't put it more honestly.
