The AudioQuest NRG-X3 is a three-pin power cable with a C13 coupler that supplies hi-fi components with a ground conductor and higher current demand.

C13 is the connector the vast majority of hi-fi devices carry — three contacts in the typical cold-appliance trapezoid shape. That makes the X3 the workhorse of the NRG entry class: the same design as the smaller X2, but with a larger gauge, grounding, and correspondingly more reserve.

Why the NRG-X3?

Because an amplifier during music playback doesn't draw a steady current, but in bursts. A cable that's too thin holds back exactly those bursts. The NRG-X3 works with direction-controlled Long-Grain Copper (LGC) in a Semi-Solid Concentric geometry: a few substantial strands in one fixed layer that never swap position within the cable. Less grain distortion in the copper, less interaction between strands, cold-welded contacts instead of solder joints — none of this is magic, all of it is solid engineering.

What you get

A cable that doesn't stand out in everyday use — and that's exactly the point. Where a bundled little cord used to hang, the bass sounds a bit tidier after the swap, transients arrive with more definition, and the soundstage loses some restlessness. The effect isn't a curtain lifting; it's a noise floor getting quieter.

Who is the NRG-X3 for?

For integrated amplifiers, mains filters, streaming amps, CD players, and anything else with a C13 input that's currently hanging off its original cable. Honestly: if your device has a flat C7 socket, you're in the wrong place here — then you need the NRG-X2 or NRG-Y2. And if you already own a good power cable, don't expect a leap from the X3; it's a first step, not an end goal.

Our verdict

The NRG-X3 is the most sensible answer to the question "What do I get once the bundled cable has to go?" It costs little, sits solidly, lasts a long time, and brings calm exactly where manufacturers usually cut corners. Anyone wanting more later will find the next step in the NRG-Y3 and NRG-Z3 — but nobody has to start there.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the NRG-X3 and the NRG-X2?

The number of pins, the coupler, and the gauge. The X3 is three-pin, has a C13 cold-appliance coupler, and 1.31 mm² gauge for up to 10 A. The X2 is two-pin with a flat C7 coupler and only 2.5 A. Both share the conductor material and geometry — but not the intended use.

Does the NRG-X3 fit my integrated amplifier?

If your amplifier has a three-pin C13 socket, yes. That's the case for the vast majority of integrated amplifiers. Very powerful power amps occasionally have a larger C15 or C19 socket — then you need a different cable. Tell us your model, and we'll take a quick look.

What does Semi-Solid Concentric mean?

Instead of many thin strands in multiple layers, a few substantial strands sit here in a single, concentric layer around a core wire. They're packed tightly and don't swap position within the cable. That reduces the interaction between strands, which AudioQuest sees as a cause of distortion.

Which mains plug does the cable have?

The European version comes with a three-pin Schuko plug per CEE 7/7. For Swiss outlets, an adapter is therefore needed depending on the socket. Ask us about your situation before ordering — we'll tell you what you need instead of leaving you to guess.

Why order the NRG-X3 at HD Zürisee?

Because we don't recommend cables by price tag, but by device. We'll also tell you when a cheaper model is enough — that happens more often than you might like. Our team in Wädenswil can be reached at 044 680 22 00 · WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) · shop@hdzuerisee.ch.
