Audio-Technica ATN3600L Replacement Stylus (AT3600L)

The Audio-Technica ATN3600L is the original conical replacement stylus for the AT3600L moving-magnet cartridge.

It's not an upgrade, it's a spare part — and that's exactly its charm: no new cartridge to mount, no tonearm to realign. Pull off the old stylus, snap on the new one, done. The AT3600L comes fitted at the factory on a great many entry-level turntables, so the ATN3600L is often exactly the part that's due after a few hundred hours of music.

Why the ATN3600L?

Because a worn stylus doesn't just sound tired — it works like fine sandpaper. Highs go dull, sibilants turn harsh — and the groove holds a grudge, permanently. The ATN3600L brings your cartridge back with the original conical diamond (0.6 mil) to the state it was built for: same geometry, same stylus mass, same behaviour in the groove.

Who is the ATN3600L for?

For you, if your turntable carries an AT3600L or a compatible cartridge from the 3600 series and the stylus has clocked its hours. Plain talk: Audio-Technica no longer lists the ATN3600L itself in its current lineup — the manufacturer names the equally conical ATN3600LC as its successor. If you want to move up in sound, go for the elliptical ATN3600LE instead. And if you run a different cartridge, say an AT-VM95 or an Ortofon, you need a different stylus, full stop. A look at the marking on your cartridge saves you a return.

Which cartridges and turntables does the ATN3600L fit?

It fits the Audio-Technica AT3600L moving-magnet cartridge as well as the compatible AT3600, AT3601, AT3626, AT3650, AT3650C, AT3650L and AT3651. At the factory these are fitted, among others, in the AT-LP60X series, the AT-LPGO-BT, and the Thorens TD 101 A and TD 201.

How do I know if the ATN3600L is the right stylus?

Look at the cartridge body on your tonearm. If it reads AT3600L or one of the compatible 3600-series designations, the ATN3600L fits. Audio-Technica writes stylus and cartridge names without a hyphen, though retailers often notate it differently. The only thing that matters is the number sequence on your cartridge.

When is a stylus swap due?

Audio-Technica specifies around 300 to 500 hours of play time for this stylus type. At two records a week, that's roughly three to four years. Swap sooner if the highs sound dull, sibilants distort, or the diamond looks visibly flattened under a magnifier.

What's the difference to the ATN3600LC and ATN3600LE?

All three fit the same cartridge. According to Audio-Technica, the ATN3600LC is the successor model to the ATN3600L and carries the same conical diamond. The ATN3600LE has an elliptical diamond at 0.3 × 0.7 mil, reads the groove more finely, and is the sonic upgrade — with no cartridge swap needed.
