The Argon Audio Malmö Sub 10 is an active bass-reflex subwoofer with a 25 cm long-throw driver and a built-in Class D amplifier that reaches down to 37 Hz. It's the larger of the two Malmö models, aimed at rooms where a 20 cm driver reaches its limit sooner.

Why the Malmö Sub 10?

Five hertz of extra reach sounds like little, but it's exactly the range where film effects and organ foundations live. What matters here is less the amplifier power – both models sit at 100 watts RMS – than cone area: a 25 cm driver moves noticeably more air at the same excursion and has to work less hard for the same level.

What you get

Black, square footprint, 32 centimetres per side and 12.4 kilograms: the Sub 10 makes no secret of being a tool. The reflex port fires downward, and the amplifier section on the back carries a level knob, a crossover frequency from 35 to 120 Hz and the phase switch. Connection is via a single RCA input, and it switches on automatically with the first signal.

Who is the Malmö Sub 10 suited for – and who isn't it for?

Honestly: in a small home office, the Sub 10 is overkill – the Sub 8 is enough there and takes up less space. The larger model makes sense in living spaces from about 25 square metres upward, in home cinemas, and anywhere headroom matters more than a small footprint.

Our verdict

The Sub 10 is the pragmatic route to bass you feel in your gut, without heading into high-end territory to get it. Soberly built, simply set up, honest in its results. Frequently asked questions

How deep does the Argon Audio Malmö Sub 10 play?

Down to 37 Hz at minus three decibels, up to 180 Hz at the top. That covers the range that bookshelf and many floorstanding speakers can no longer reproduce cleanly. The Sub 8 in the same series only starts at 42 Hz – you notice the difference clearly, especially with film effects.

Can I connect the Malmö Sub 10 to an AV receiver?

Yes, that's the standard case. Run an RCA cable from the receiver's subwoofer or LFE output to the Sub 10's input, and the receiver's bass management handles the crossover. In this case, turn the crossover control on the subwoofer all the way up so it doesn't filter twice.

Does the downward-firing bass reflex port cause problems on carpet?

No, that's what the feet are for: they keep enough clearance from the floor so the opening stays free. On deep-pile carpet, a firm base underneath is still worthwhile, since the subwoofer then stands more stably and less bass gets lost in the pile. On parquet or tile, the feet are enough on their own.

Why buy the Malmö Sub 10 from HD Zürisee?

Because the difference between a boomy subwoofer and an invisible one is rarely down to the unit itself, but to placement and tuning. We work through that with you instead of just shipping you a box – with nearly three decades of experience and our own technician in-house.

Goes well with

The rest of the chain deserves attention too: everything for the home cinema, matching floorstanding speakers for the front, or more gear from Argon Audio.
