The Argon Audio Forus 55 in Walnut is a passive 2.5-way floorstanding speaker in a slim wood-effect cabinet, playing stereo directly on the floor without a frame or stand.
Walnut is the finish for anyone who doesn't want to hide their system. A warm brown tone, calm grain, plus the lacquered front under the magnetic grille – next to oak flooring and a retro sideboard, the Forus 55 looks like furniture, not like technology. A speaker that even the household member who otherwise cares little about hi-fi will accept.
Why the Forus 55?
Because a tower just under 86 centimetres tall and only 17 centimetres wide solves a rare combination: full-grown bass reproduction with a minimal footprint. Two 5.25-inch paper cones deliver the cone area, the 12.2-kilogram MDF cabinet with a 21-millimetre-thick baffle keeps them calm. Where a wide box would dominate the room, the Forus 55 stays a slim line against the wall.
What you get
Two speakers that cover 45 to 20,000 Hz without dictating anything. No amplifier module, no app lock-in, no subscriptions: the Forus 55 takes whatever you send it – turntable, CD, radio, network streamer, or all of it together. The gold-plated single-wire terminals are quickly wired up, the rubber feet are included, and the front covers hold magnetically and come off in two seconds.
Who is the Forus 55 suited for – and who isn't it for?
Honestly: if the walnut has to match your furniture, take a close look at the finish beforehand – it's a wood-look film over the cabinet, not solid wood. If you absolutely need a real veneer look, you'll need to look in a higher class. Technically: 4 ohms wants a capable amplifier, and the rear bass reflex port needs clearance from the wall. If you can offer both, you get a lot of speaker here for very little footprint.
Our verdict
The Walnut version is the cosiest of the three finishes and the one we're asked about most often. In a furnished living room, it simply makes more of a statement than any box that looks like a box. Frequently asked questions
Is the Walnut finish of the Forus 55 real wood?
No, it's a walnut wood-effect film over the MDF body. That's common at this class, looks good in a living room, and is noticeably less sensitive to scratches and sunlight than real veneer. Acoustically, the finish doesn't matter anyway.
How deep does the Forus 55 go in the bass?
Argon states 45 to 20,000 Hz at plus/minus 3 dB. That fully covers electric bass, kick drum and the fundamental tone of cello or piano. Only the very lowest organ and cinema-effect registers stay out of reach – that's what a subwoofer would be for, though many stereo listeners don't miss it at all.
Does the Forus 55 suit a turntable?
Yes, very well. You just need an amplifier with a phono input or a separate phono preamp in between, matched to the cartridge type. The Forus 55's calm tuning suits analogue sources well. We're happy to put together the right chain for your deck with you.
Can I combine the Forus 55 with the Forus Center?
Yes. Both use paper cone woofers and a silk dome, so voices move from the fronts to the centre without a break in tone. The Forus 55 handles left and right, the Center handles dialogue. You then briefly match the levels on the AV receiver.
Why buy the Forus 55 in Walnut from HD Zürisee?
Because colour, room and technology need to be decided together. We assess how the wood-effect finish works next to your furniture, which amplifier handles the 4 ohms cleanly, and where the speakers should stand. Plus an experienced team with our own technician – even after the purchase.
Goes well with
The walnut fronts want company: an amplifier with reserves, a turntable for the analogue side, the matching center speaker for home cinema, or an overview of the Argon Audio world.
