The Argon Audio Forus 55 is a passive 2.5-way floorstanding speaker with two 5.25-inch woofers and a rear bass reflex port, working as the front speaker of a stereo or home cinema system.
In Black, it does exactly what a good floorstander should: disappear. 17 centimetres wide, dark finish, magnetic front grille with no visible brackets – and suddenly there's music in the room, but no piece of furniture. If you've had bookshelf speakers until now and regularly wondered, when turning up the volume, where the foundation went, this is the answer.
Why the Forus 55?
The 2.5-way principle is the actual trick. Both 5.25-inch paper cones work together in the bass, but only one runs all the way up to the 3000 Hz crossover – the second drops out already at 1500 Hz. Result: double the cone area in the bass, without two drivers getting in each other's way in the midrange. Add a 21-millimetre-thick baffle that keeps the cabinet calm. Solid engineering instead of marketing physics.
What you get
A complete passive speaker with no expiry date: no power supply, no streaming module that stops getting updates in five years. You choose the amplifier, you replace it at some point, the speaker stays. It's connected via gold-plated single-wire terminals that accept banana plugs just as well as bare wire. The 1-inch silk dome tweeter with neodymium drive sits up top, the bass reflex port at the back – and that's exactly what determines how you position it.
Who is the Forus 55 suited for – and who isn't it for?
Straight talk: with 4-ohm impedance, the Forus 55 wants an amplifier that likes low-impedance loads – a very frugal mini integrated amp will start to sweat here. Because of the rear port, it also needs air to the wall, around 20 to 30 centimetres. If you don't have that space or sit in a very small room, you're better off with the compact Forus 5. And if you want the amplifier and network built straight into the speaker, take a look at the active Forte models.
Our verdict
The Forus 55 is the unfussy floorstander for people who'd rather listen to music than read datasheets – and still want one that's right. Which amplifier fits 4 ohms and 88 dB, how much wall clearance your room allows, black or a wood-effect finish instead: we'll work that out with you. Frequently asked questions
Which amplifier suits the Argon Audio Forus 55?
An amplifier that works stably at 4 ohms. Thanks to 88 dB sensitivity, around 40 to 60 watts per channel is already enough for powerful levels in a living room. Argon doesn't give a power handling rating for the Forus series, so impedance stability matters most. We're happy to tell you which model suits your room.
How far from the wall does the Forus 55 need to stand?
Plan on 20 to 30 centimetres of clearance to the back wall. The bass reflex port sits at the back – if the speaker stands too close, upper bass builds up and playback gets thick. More clearance brings definition and spaciousness. Slight toe-in toward the seating position also sharpens the centre image.
What does 2.5-way mean for the Forus 55?
Both 5.25-inch woofers play together in the bass, but only one runs all the way up to the 3000 Hz crossover to the tweeter. The second is already rolled off from 1500 Hz. This gives you the cone area of two drivers in the bass, without the drawbacks in the midrange – a proven concept for slim floorstanders.
Is the Forus 55 sold individually or as a pair?
We offer the Forus 55 in pairs, as befits stereo. Each speaker weighs 12.2 kilograms and measures 17 × 86 × 26.6 centimetres. If you exceptionally need an odd number for a home cinema, just get in touch – we'll find a solution.
Why buy the Forus 55 from HD Zürisee?
Because a floorstander only comes into its own in the right room. Our shop has been around since 1997, and we look with you at whether amplifier, wall clearance and seating position work together – honestly, even when a smaller model would be the better choice. Mauri, our technician, stays reachable after purchase.
