The Argon Audio Fenris A4 is an active bookshelf speaker pair with built-in amplifiers, digital-to-analogue converter and connections for TV, turntable and Bluetooth. In Black, it recedes visually: next to a TV or in a dark shelf it's barely noticeable – until it starts playing.

Why the Fenris A4?

Active here doesn't just mean “amplifier built in”. Each driver gets its own Class D amplifier – 50 watts for the woofer/midrange, 25 watts for the tweeter – and the crossover works digitally in the DSP before any amplification happens at all. That's where the clean, effortless reproduction comes from, which you wouldn't expect from a 4-inch chassis. The A4 is operated via remote control, and it handles switching on by itself.

What you get

One cable to the TV via HDMI ARC, with the TV remote controlling the volume too. Add an optical input for a games console or streaming box, an RCA input for anything analogue, and a phono MM input where the turntable lands without a detour. Honestly: in a large, open living space, the small Fenris eventually hits its limits – that's where the A5 is the more assured answer. Is the Fenris A4 suitable as a TV speaker?

Yes. Via HDMI ARC you connect the TV with a single cable and keep controlling the volume with the TV remote. Compared with the flat speakers built into a TV, voices and music in particular gain noticeably in body and clarity.

How much amplifier power is inside the Fenris A4?

A total of four Class D amplifiers: 50 watts for the woofer/midrange and 25 watts for the tweeter, so 75 watts per speaker. Because each driver is driven directly with no passive crossover in the way, this power is easily enough for normal living rooms.

Can I add a subwoofer to the Fenris A4?

Yes. On the back there's an RCA pre-out that you connect to an active subwoofer. This is mainly worthwhile for film sound and electronic music. For voices, jazz and most living rooms, the A4 does perfectly well without extra low-end support.
