Wharfedale from England (founded in 1932) has always stood for a lot of sound for the money. The current EVO 5 series pairs an AMT ribbon tweeter with classic woofer/mid-range drivers and delivers an open, balanced sound at fair prices. At our place by Lake Zurich, you also get an honest assessment – from the bookshelf speaker to the floorstander.

Honestly

Wharfedale is the classic price-to-performance tip – warm, musical, cleanly built, with the walnut variant featuring real wood veneer. Don't expect the last bit of resolution and dynamics of the big high-end league – the EVO 5 was never trying to compete there. For getting started and solid mid-range, it does a lot right. The bookshelf speakers still belong on good stands, though.
