What do I need a 75-ohm digital cable for?

For the coaxial S/PDIF connection between a transport, streamer or TV and an external DAC. Digital signals are high-frequency; if the 75-ohm impedance isn't consistent throughout, reflections occur on the line. That's exactly what the NF-75 is built for – the cable and T8 RCA connectors are matched to each other.

Can't I just use a normal Cinch cable?

Better not to. Analogue Cinch cables aren't designed for 75 ohms, even if the connector looks identical. It often still works fine over short distances, but on longer runs, dropouts or connection failures can occur. If you're buying a cable anyway, get the one specified for the job.

Which length should I choose?

Everything from 50 centimetres to 10 metres is available – take what you actually need. Unlike with analogue connections, length isn't critical on a correctly terminated 75-ohm line. Leave a bit of extra for the bend behind the rack, but don't route unnecessary metres.

Coaxial or Toslink – which is better?

Coaxial usually transmits higher sample rates and is mechanically more robust. Toslink, however, has a genuine advantage: it galvanically isolates the devices and prevents ground loops, for example between a TV and the system.
