The AVM Ovation MP 8.3S is a media and CD player that brings together a classic slot-in CD drive, a high-resolution streaming source and a standalone DAC in one chassis.
Physical media apparently haven't gone out of fashion at AVM in Malsch – rightly so, because if you have a CD collection you've built up over the years, you don't want to digitise it just to keep listening to it. The MP 8.3S in silver plays CDs just as naturally as network streams, and behind it sits the same tube output stage that already distinguishes the larger Ovation units.
Why the AVM Ovation MP 8.3S?
At its core, the MP 8.3S is a universal source: CD, network streaming, USB storage and external digital sources all run through the same ESS Sabre9038 PRO converter with four D/A converters per channel. Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect MAX, AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready are on board, plus internet radio for anyone who just wants music at the touch of a button. The tube output stage with adjustable RGB lighting gives the whole sound a warmth you wouldn't necessarily expect from a purely digital device at first glance – and that you certainly notice at second glance, when the tubes glow softly in the dark.
What you hear, get, experience
Whether CD from the slot-in drive or a Tidal stream over LAN: playback stays tonally rounded, with a midrange warmth reminiscent of classic tube gear, paired with the resolution of a modern high-end DAC up to DSD256 and 384 kHz/32-bit PCM. The MP 8.3S also accepts external digital sources – a TV via HDMI ARC, a computer via USB-C, other players via S/PDIF – and converts them via the same high-quality chip. The output level can be switched between fixed and variable, depending on whether a preamp or an integrated amplifier is behind it.
Who is the AVM Ovation MP 8.3S suited to?
For everyone who wants a CD collection, network streaming and a serious DAC in one device, instead of stacking three separate boxes. Also ideal as a pure digital hub that puts other sources to use too. Bottom line: the MP 8.3S has no headphone output and no volume control on the device in the classic preamp sense – it's a source, not a control centre. If you're after a standalone preamp with input selection and a volume knob for multiple sources, you're better off with the PAS 8.3S.
Our verdict
The MP 8.3S is the answer for anyone who doesn't want to give up physical media but has still arrived in the streaming age. Cleanly built, with a converter quality that also convinces as a standalone DAC for other sources. For us at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, it's the logical companion to a preamp or an integrated amplifier from the same Ovation family – a device that treats your CD collection not as a dying format, but as a fully-fledged source alongside Qobuz and Tidal.

Frequently asked questions
Can the AVM Ovation MP 8.3S also be used as a standalone DAC for other devices?
Yes. Via the digital inputs (S/PDIF coaxial, optical, USB-C), the MP 8.3S also accepts external sources and converts them through the same ESS Sabre9038 DAC as CD and streaming. A TV, computer or another player can be connected directly this way.
Does the MP 8.3S have a headphone output?
No, the MP 8.3S has no headphone output. It's deliberately designed as a pure source for a preamp or integrated amplifier, not as a standalone listening station for headphones. You'll find a headphone output on AVM's integrated amplifiers and preamps from the same Ovation series, such as the AS 8.3S or PAS 8.3S.
Is the output level fixed or adjustable?
Both are possible. The line-out delivers a fixed level of 2.5 V, the pre-out can be adjusted up to 5.4 V. Depending on the connected device, you choose whether the MP 8.3S works with a fixed or variable level.
Do I need a streaming subscription to use the MP 8.3S?
No. CD playback, internet radio and connected USB storage or hard drives work completely without a subscription; the device is also a fully-fledged player entirely offline. Qobuz, Tidal and Spotify Connect come along as an option as soon as you want to use them – never a requirement.
Does the MP 8.3S play CD-Rs, or only pressed original CDs?
Both. The slot-in drive reliably reads CD audio and self-burned CD-Rs to the Red Book standard, with no drawer to jam. So your old mix CDs from the nineties work just as smoothly as freshly bought silver discs from the specialist store.
