The Wharfedale EVO 5.1 is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker that combines an AMT tweeter with a 130 mm Kevlar woofer in an 11.5-litre cabinet.
Small enough for a shelf, serious enough for a real system. Wharfedale gave the whole EVO 5 series the same AMT tweeter throughout — so the 5.1 isn't a stripped-down entry model, but the most compact expression of the same idea.
Why the EVO 5.1?
The AMT tweeter is why this box sounds bigger than it looks. An Air Motion Transformer moves air through a folded diaphragm instead of a dome — giving a treble resolution that's finer and, at the same time, more relaxed than most bookshelf speakers in this class. Add to that the SLPP bass reflex port: air escapes not through a rear-firing tube but through a slot on the underside of the cabinet. That makes the 5.1 noticeably more forgiving near a wall — handy, since your shelf tends to sit against a wall rather than float in open space.
What you hear
Voices sit cleanly in the centre, cymbals don't hiss, and the soundstage clearly extends beyond the distance between the two speakers. The 130 mm Kevlar woofer reaches down to 56 Hz (±3 dB) and stays dry in the lower midrange instead of sounding thick. And when you turn it up, the sound doesn't harden: the 5.1 stays composed where smaller boxes start to strain.
Who is the EVO 5.1 for?
Ideal for rooms up to around 20 m², for a home office, a second system, or as rear speakers in an EVO home cinema setup. Let's be blunt: if you want to fill a 40 m² loft at volume, go for the 5.2 or straight to a floorstander — physics simply won't give you more from this cone area. And with a nominal impedance of 4 Ohm (minimum 3.4 Ohm), it wants an amplifier that delivers current stably; the small digital amp in your drawer won't do it justice.
Our verdict
For the price of the pair, you get genuine AMT technology, cleanly veneered or lacquered cabinets, and a tuning that still doesn't annoy you after three hours. That's an unusual amount of speaker for the money. Which amplifier fits and whether your room calls for the 5.1 or the 5.2 — we're happy to work that out with you at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, just give us a call.

FAQ
Can I use the Wharfedale EVO 5.1 in a home cinema setup?
Yes, it makes a very good surround or rear speaker. Because it uses the same AMT tweeter as the larger EVO 5 models, the sound stays consistent throughout, and effects move seamlessly from front to back. For the front channels in larger rooms, the 5.2 or 5.3 would be the better choice.
Do I really need speaker stands for the EVO 5.1?
Not strictly necessary, but worthwhile. On a matching EVO 5.1 stand, the tweeter sits at ear height and the cabinet stands free of vibration — you'll hear both immediately in the soundstage. It also works on a shelf, in which case please use the included rubber feet.
Which amplifier suits the Wharfedale EVO 5.1?
25 to 100 watts at 4 Ohm is recommended. More important than raw wattage is an amplifier that stays stable at low impedance, since the 5.1 dips to 3.4 Ohm. Solid mid-range integrated amplifiers pair beautifully — which one suits your music, we're happy to discuss on the phone.
