The Tannoy Platinum B6 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker that combines a 25mm silk dome with a 165mm paper composite cone in a rear-ported bass reflex cabinet. The light variant – white front, light wood decor – is the friendliest of the three: designed for rooms where a black block simply doesn't work.
The name Tannoy has stood for speakers from Scotland since the 1920s. The Platinum B6 is the entry point into the range – affordable, but without excuses.
Why the Platinum B6?
Because it invests where it's heard. The paper composite diaphragm is light and stiff and does without a dust cap, which benefits midrange dispersion. Inside, the cabinet is braced; outside sit gold-plated terminals for banana, spade or bare wire. And at 86 dB into 8 ohms, it's so uncomplicated that the amplifier question rarely becomes a problem.
What you hear
Clear, well-focused voices, a bass that's dry rather than bloated, and treble that stays friendly even over longer sessions. The B6 doesn't try to sound bigger than it is – and that's exactly why it sounds honest. Acoustic music, jazz, singer-songwriters and speech suit it especially well.
Who is the Platinum B6 for?
For bright living spaces, bedrooms, offices, and anyone looking for a speaker that subordinates itself to the decor instead of the other way around. Small to medium rooms are its territory.
Plainly put: white wants looking after – fingerprints and dust show up here more than on black. And sonically: below 50 Hz, nothing more happens. Anyone who wants bass in the gut takes the F6 or plans in a subwoofer. Hand on heart: for most living rooms, the B6 is entirely enough.
Our verdict
A thoroughly solid bookshelf speaker that does exactly what it should – and in white also works in places where hi-fi otherwise has to be negotiated. If you're unsure whether your amplifier fits or how to set up the pair: get in touch with HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll work through it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Tannoy Platinum B6 easy to drive?
Yes. With 86 dB efficiency and 8 ohms nominal impedance, it's uncritical and already runs cleanly at 20 watts. 20 to 80 watts is recommended. Compact streaming amplifiers also drive it without issue – the quality of the amp stage counts more than raw power.
How big can the room be for the Platinum B6?
Up to about 25 square meters, it plays in a balanced way and loud enough. In larger rooms it eventually lacks volume in the bass – there, the Platinum F6 floorstander is the better choice. We're happy to look at your room situation together with you.
Is the Platinum B6 also available in black?
Yes. The series comes in three finishes: black, black with dark wood decor, and white with light wood decor. Sonically, all three are identical – it's purely about looks. You'll find all variants in our Tannoy overview.
What's the best way to set up the Platinum B6?
Freely on stands, tweeter at ear height, with some distance from the back wall. About 10 to 20 centimeters is enough to keep the rear bass reflex port from booming. It also works on a shelf, but shouldn't disappear into an alcove there. Angling the two speakers slightly toward the listening position costs nothing.
