The Wharfedale EVO 5.4 is the flagship of the EVO 5 series: a three-way floorstanding speaker with an AMT tweeter, midrange dome and two 165 mm Kevlar woofers.

Where the 5.3 is optimised for living-room friendliness, the 5.4 goes all in: 59.5 litres of cabinet volume, 31 kilos per speaker, 90 dB sensitivity. This is the box for rooms where smaller speakers simply starve.

Why the EVO 5.4?

Displacement is hard to substitute. Two 165 mm Kevlar woofers move noticeably more air than two 130 mm ones, and you notice that not just in the deep bass but above all in the effortlessness: the 5.4 plays at elevated volume as relaxed as if it were bored. The SLPP port in the plinth distributes pressure evenly in three directions — which is why a speaker this size still doesn't boom in the room.

What you hear

Bass lines gain contour instead of just volume, orchestras are sorted across the width instead of being bunched together, and the AMT tweeter ensures the treble stays refined throughout. With 90 dB sensitivity, the 5.4 is also the most grateful box in the series — it doesn't need a power struggle to get going.

Who is the EVO 5.4 for?

Built for generous living rooms and open floor plans from about 30 m² upward. Let's be blunt: the 5.4 doesn't belong in a 12 m² room. There you'd squeeze a box that needs room to breathe into a corner and get bass no room can control any more — for smaller rooms, the 5.3 is clearly the better choice. And even though it's forgiving at 90 dB, an amplifier with reserves pays off audibly here.

Our verdict

The 5.4 is the point where the EVO 5 series breaks out of the price bracket it actually competes in. Composure, depth and fine detail at a level you don't expect in this class. If you're wondering whether your room can carry it, call us at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil — we'll go through it with you before you order.

What the trade press says: "The Wharfedale EVO 5.4 is an absolute hit for anyone who wants to listen at a high sonic level without overextending themselves financially." — lite-magazin.de, 07/2025 (90 of 90 points, "Editor's Choice"). AREA DVD also awarded it "Overall reference floorstanding speaker up to 3,000 euros" in its review 06/2025.

FAQ

Do I still need a subwoofer with the Wharfedale EVO 5.4?

For music, practically never. The two 165 mm Kevlar woofers reach down to 42 Hz (±3 dB) and push on to 36 Hz — that's more foundation than most living rooms can cleanly handle anyway. Only for home cinema with very deep effects below 35 Hz does a subwoofer make sense as an addition.

Which amplifier suits the EVO 5.4?

30 to 200 watts at 4 Ohm is recommended. With 90 dB sensitivity and a minimum impedance of 4.3 Ohm, it's more forgiving than the smaller models in the series. An amplifier with power reserves still pays off audibly, especially in large rooms.

How much distance from the wall does the EVO 5.4 need?

Less than you'd expect for its size. Because the SLPP port in the plinth radiates in three directions instead of to the rear, it's forgiving near a wall. About 30 cm of distance is a good starting point, from there it's worth experimenting with a few centimetres either way.

Do the spikes scratch my parquet floor?

Not if you use the included spike discs. They spread the load over a larger area and protect the floor without ruining the mechanical coupling. On carpet you can use the spikes directly. At 31 kg per speaker, though, a helping hand when setting it up isn't a luxury — it's a good idea.
