The Wharfedale EVO 5.3 is a three-way floorstanding speaker with an AMT tweeter, a dedicated midrange dome and two 130 mm Kevlar woofers.

A floorstander that doesn't feel like a piece of furniture in the living room: 93 cm tall, 27 cm wide, slim enough for normal living conditions — and still carrying the series' full technology on board.

Why the EVO 5.3?

The 5.3 is the point where the EVO 5 series grows up. Three ways means every frequency band gets its own driver: AMT for the treble, a 50 mm fabric dome for the mids, two 130 mm Kevlar cones for the bass. The SLPP port sits at the bottom of the plinth and distributes pressure in three directions instead of blasting it against the rear wall — which is why the 5.3 doesn't boom even when placed closer to the wall than the textbook would like.

Two woofers instead of one means, above all, that the bass comes more effortlessly. The 5.3 reaches down to 46 Hz (±3 dB) and pushes on to 40 Hz without straining to do it. Above that sits a midrange reproduction that places voices vividly in the room, and a treble that doesn't grate even on demanding recordings. Classical and jazz are its home turf.

How big can the room be for the Wharfedale EVO 5.3?

It's happiest in rooms between roughly 20 and 35 m². Below that it quickly overloads the room in the bass; above that it loses composure — then the EVO 5.4 with its larger woofers is the better choice.

What do I lose compared to the EVO 5.4?

Mainly maximum SPL and the last few Hertz of deep bass: 46 instead of 42 Hz at ±3 dB, 106 instead of 108 dB maximum SPL. In medium-sized rooms that's no drawback — the 5.3 often sounds even tidier there, because it excites fewer room modes.

Is the walnut cabinet real wood?

Yes, the walnut version is finished in genuine wood veneer; black, white and Lunar Grey are matte lacquered. All four finishes are carefully built, the edges cleanly worked and the front covers held magnetically — the trade press explicitly highlights the build quality of the series.
