The Tannoy Prestige GR Super Tweeter is an external super tweeter that sits on top of an existing Tannoy speaker, draws its signal from that speaker's terminals, and extends the system's frequency response up to 62 kHz. It's designed for the Prestige GR and Legacy series – not for the Autograph Mini.

The idea behind it is old and still controversial: a driver that only starts working where human hearing officially stops. And yet you hear a difference – not "more treble", but more air and cleaner phase behaviour at the top end. Anyone who thinks this is voodoo should listen to it on a Canterbury once before judging.

Why the Prestige GR Super Tweeter?

Because it's not off-the-shelf accessory, it was tuned to match the Dual Concentric drivers of the Prestige series. The 25mm magnesium alloy dome is just 44 microns thick and is driven by a neodymium motor. More important in practice: you can select the crossover frequency (14, 16 or 18 kHz) and level (89 to 95 dB in five steps) via plug-in jumpers, and the tweeter can be tilted vertically to aim at your listening position. This isn't a decorative object, it's a tool.

What you hear

Not louder treble – that would be a misunderstanding. What changes is the space around the instruments: cymbal decay, string shimmer and reverb tails gain more naturalness. Many describe it as taking "a lid off". The effect is subtle, but it's there – and it's reversible, because if you don't like it, you turn the level down a step.

Who is the Super Tweeter for?

For owners of a Tannoy Prestige GR or Legacy who want to refine their system, not replace it. And for people who listen to high-resolution recordings and want to know what's actually happening up there.

Plainly put: this is a luxury upgrade, not a lifeline. If your setup isn't right, your room booms, or your source sounds tired, the Super Tweeter fixes exactly none of that – then your money is better spent on acoustics or electronics. And: it doesn't fit the Autograph Mini. If you own a different brand, talk to us first.

Our verdict

The Prestige GR Super Tweeter is one of the few accessories we don't roll our eyes at. It's cleanly engineered, adjustable rather than dogmatic, and does exactly what it promises – if the system underneath it is already good. Call us if you want to know whether your setup is ready for it. We'll tell you honestly if there's something more worthwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a super tweeter actually do?

It extends a speaker's frequency response upward – here up to 62 kHz. It doesn't replace the existing tweeter, but supplements it above 14, 16 or 18 kHz. The goal is cleaner phase behaviour at the top of the band, which is noticeable as more spaciousness and air.

Which Tannoy speakers does the Prestige GR Super Tweeter suit?

It's designed for the Prestige GR series and the Legacy models – so Stirling, Turnberry, Kensington, Canterbury, Westminster Royal, Arden, Cheviot and Eaton. The Autograph Mini is explicitly not compatible. For other models, we'll clarify suitability with you beforehand.

How is the Super Tweeter connected?

It's placed on top of the speaker and connected in parallel to its terminals – no separate amplifier channel is needed. You set the crossover frequency and level via plug-in jumpers. We'll take care of the setup at your home if you'd like.

How do I set crossover frequency and level on the Super Tweeter?

According to the table in the manual, not by feel. Tannoy lists there, for each suitable Prestige and Legacy model, the crossover frequency (14, 16 or 18 kHz) and the level step matching your speaker's efficiency. After that, you can fine-tune – one step too loud, and the treble gets edgy.

Why buy the Tannoy Prestige GR Super Tweeter from HD Zürisee?

Because this component is only as good as its tuning – the wrong crossover frequency or level makes it worse, not better. We know the Prestige series, aim the Super Tweeter at your listening position, and tell you honestly if your budget would go further elsewhere.
