The Epos ES-7N is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker that combines driver technology from the larger ES-14N with a switchable crossover voicing for free-standing or near-wall placement.

And then there's the orange. If you've always believed hi-fi has to be black and hide on a shelf, you might want to reconsider. The ES-7N is delivered as a pair.

Why the ES-7N?

Because beneath the satin orange finish sits proper engineering. The 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium dome comes from the bigger sibling and works without ferrofluid in the gap. The 130 mm mid/bass driver with a mica-filled polypropylene cone has a 30 mm voice coil and a dual-magnet motor. The cabinet is a damped MDF sandwich, and the bass reflex duct is curved and front-firing.

What you hear

Directness without harshness. The ES-7N sounds fresh, open and rhythmically precise, renders voices cleanly and stays remarkably composed while doing it. From 20 cm of width comes a soundstage that feels bigger than the cabinet — so colour isn't the only thing that stands out.

Who is the ES-7N for?

Straight talk: for smaller and medium rooms, for shelf, sideboard or stand, and for people who are allowed to see a speaker as a piece of furniture too. Not suited if you want to fill large rooms at volume, need deep bass under 45 Hz, or own an amplifier that already struggles at 4 ohms. And yes, orange is a decision — not one made half-heartedly.

Our verdict

A small speaker with real character and a design you won't overlook. At the What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025, the ES-7N was honoured in the Standmount category and described there as “impressively unfussy and superb-sounding” (What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025). Andy's roots in the industry go back to 1993; at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll give you an honest read on where the ES-7N fits.

Frequently asked questions

Does the orange ES-7N sound different from the other colour options?

No. All four finishes — Orange, Black, White and Walnut — use the same cabinet, the same drivers and the same crossover. Only the surface differs. So you choose by decor and taste, not by sound.

What cables and connectors do I need for the ES-7N?

The ES-7N has a single-wiring terminal for 4 mm banana plugs. A normal speaker cable with pre-fitted banana plugs is all you need. Bi-wiring isn't supported — you only need one cable per speaker, which saves money and cable clutter behind the shelf.

Does the ES-7N fit in a small room?

Yes, it actually performs especially well there. Up to about 25 square metres, you don't need a bigger box. If it stands close to the wall or on a shelf, set the switch at the terminal to the lower position, and the balance between bass, mids and treble stays coherent.

Is the ES-7N suitable for turntables?

Very much so, since it reproduces fine dynamics and timing cleanly. What matters is the chain in front of it: a phono preamp matched to the cartridge, and an integrated amplifier that stays stable at 4 ohms. We're happy to advise you on that.

Why buy the Epos ES-7N at HD Zürisee?

Because we tell you what fits your room, instead of selling you what happens to be in stock. You get personal advice on amplifier, stands and cabling, delivery and on-site setup, plus a contact person who's still there after the purchase.

Goes well with

Obvious matches: an integrated amplifier, matching speaker stands and a turntable as a source.
