Wie schwer darf ein Plattengewicht für meinen Dreher sein?

Als Faustregel verträgt ein Laufwerk mit metallenem Teller und ordentlichem Lager 300 Gramm problemlos. Leichte Kunststoffchassis und schwache Riemenmotoren geraten dagegen an ihre Grenzen. Im Zweifel gilt: Läuft der Teller nach dem Auflegen weiterhin gleichmässig an und bleibt die Drehzahl stabil, ist alles in Ordnung.

Muss ich das Antiskating oder die Auflagekraft neu einstellen?

Nein. Das Gewicht liegt auf der Platte, nicht am Tonarm, und verändert die Auflagekraft der Nadel nicht. Was sich ändern kann, ist die Höhe der Plattenoberfläche um einen Sekundenbruchteil eines Millimeters – für den Azimut oder die Tonarmhöhe ist das nicht relevant.

Beschädigt das Gewicht das Plattenlabel?

Nein. Die Auflageseite ist mit Filz beschichtet und liegt flächig auf dem Papier auf. Setz das Gewicht senkrecht auf den Zapfen, statt es seitlich über die Platte zu schieben, dann bleibt auch das Label kratzerfrei. Bei Picture-Discs ohne Label empfehlen wir generell etwas Zurückhaltung.

The Dynavox PST300 in silver is a record weight (stabilizer) made of aluminium with a built-in spirit level, which keeps the record flat on the platter during playback.

Brushed silver aluminium, 80 millimeters in diameter, about 300 grams. It sits where everyone can see it – right in the middle of the record – so it's allowed to look good. But what matters more is what happens beneath it: less movement in the vinyl, calmer tracking, and a turntable you can finally, properly level with the built-in spirit level.

Why the PST300 in silver?

Vinyl vibrates. Not dramatically, but enough that the stylus has to iron out movement nobody ordered, on top of the music. A weight on the label couples the record more firmly to the platter and passes residual energy on to the aluminium. The result isn't a new system, but what you already have, a little tidier: more stable imaging, calmer edges, less unrest with used records.

Who is the PST300 in silver for?

For vinyl listeners with a properly built turntable who play a lot of used material and want to level their turntable properly. Honestly: if you own a very lightweight entry-level plastic turntable, you're not doing yourself any favours with 300 extra grams – the motor and bearing aren't designed for it. On sprung subchassis turntables too, a check of the suspension beforehand is worthwhile.

Our verdict

A piece of aluminium that does its job without any fuss. What we like most about the PST300 is that it doesn't promise anything physics can't back up: it calms the record, it helps with levelling, and it looks good doing it. The silver version is the more visible of the two – if you like looking at your turntable, you won't consider that a downside.

How heavy can a record weight be for my turntable?

As a rule of thumb, a turntable with a metal platter and a decent bearing handles 300 grams without any problem. Light plastic chassis and weak belt motors, on the other hand, reach their limits. If in doubt: if the platter still spins up evenly after you set the weight down and speed stays stable, everything's fine.

Do I need to readjust the anti-skating or tracking force?

No. The weight sits on the record, not on the tonearm, and doesn't change the stylus's tracking force. What can change is the height of the record surface by a fraction of a millimeter – that's not relevant for azimuth or tonearm height.

Does the weight damage the record label?

No. The contact side is felt-lined and sits flat against the paper. Set the weight straight down onto the spindle instead of sliding it sideways across the record, and the label stays scratch-free too. With picture discs that have no label, we generally recommend a bit of caution.
