Sangean U4X Worksite Radio with DAB+ and Battery

The Sangean U4X is a worksite radio with DAB+, FM, Bluetooth and a built-in lithium battery, tuned for power with IP65 protection, a roll cage and stereo pairing (TWS).

The flagship of Sangean's worksite radios: dual voice coil speaker, 12 + 12 watts on mains and a battery that ends the hunt for batteries. If the job site is noisy anyway, at least let it be good quality.

Why the U4X?

Because it offers everything the other models share, and more: Bluetooth with NFC, AVRCP and TWS, an AUX input, USB playback (MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, FLAC) and a colour backlit display. The lithium battery (18650, 3200 mAh) is built in and charged with the mains adapter. The USB-A output charges your phone.

What you hear

12 + 12 watts on mains, 9 + 9 watts on battery, delivered by a 6½-inch dual voice coil speaker. That is a different league from a worksite radio with a single driver. You adjust treble, bass, EQ and loudness, and two U4X units in a TWS pair give you stereo.

Who is the U4X for?

For anyone who wants the best on the building site or outdoors: more power, a battery without battery changes, a stereo option. Plainly put: at nearly five kilos it is a piece of furniture among radios and clearly above the smaller models in price. If you just want news and easy listening, the U5 DBT is cheaper.

Our verdict

The U4X is the worksite radio with all the trimmings: powerful, tough, with battery and a stereo option. Want to know whether it suits your use? Get in touch with HD Zürisee in Wädenswil: +41 44 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Sangean U4X have a built-in battery?

Yes. The U4X contains a lithium battery (18650, 3200 mAh) that you charge with the mains adapter, so you do not need to buy batteries. The manufacturer does not state a runtime; it depends heavily on the volume you choose.

How waterproof is the U4X?

It is protected to IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets. Rain and splashes are no problem, but submersion is not intended. The roll cage also absorbs knocks if it slips off a ladder.

Can I pair two U4X for stereo?

Yes. With the TWS function (True Wireless Stereo) you connect two U4X wirelessly as a stereo pair. Used alone, each unit plays by itself. You need two units for pairing, a single U4X is not automatically stereo.

Do I need a subscription for DAB+ and Bluetooth?

No. You receive DAB+ and FM without a subscription, and Bluetooth, AUX and USB are optional extras. The radio also plays without a phone, simply with your favourite stations.

Can I charge my phone with it?

Yes. The USB-A output delivers 5 volts and 1 ampere. That is enough to top up a smartphone but it is not a fast charger. Handy when the power bank is empty and the radio is running anyway.
