The Sangean FMT-02 (GoTune 200) is a DAB+ receiver for the car that connects to your existing car stereo via FM transmitter or AUX cable and also streams Bluetooth audio.

Why the FMT-02?

Because retrofitting DAB+ in a car otherwise quickly sounds like a workshop visit and a mounting frame. The FMT-02 sits on the windscreen, takes power from the cigarette lighter or a USB port and sends the sound via FM transmitter to a free frequency on your car radio – or by cable into the AUX input if your car has one. It is inexpensive, quick to do and easy to take along when you change cars.

The technology behind it is solid: 20 presets (10 for DAB+, 10 for the FM transmitter), automatic scan, traffic announcements (TA) and Service Following, which automatically looks for the same station on another frequency when reception changes. Via Bluetooth (A2DP, AVRCP and the hands-free profile HFP) you also stream music and navigation prompts from your phone.

What you hear

You hear digital radio without the hiss and crackle that FM often brings on the road. Sound quality depends on the path into the car radio: via AUX cable it is cleanest, via FM transmitter it depends on a truly free frequency. The Radio Power Scan automatically looks for a free FM frequency.

Who is the FMT-02 for?

For anyone who drives a car without DAB+ and wants to retrofit it without installation – from the commuter to the classic-car driver. Plain talk: in cities with many FM stations, finding an interference-free frequency can be tedious, and in tunnels or garages reception naturally drops out. A permanently installed DAB+ system with an external antenna is the better solution, but also the more involved one.

Does the FMT-02 work in every car?

In almost any car that has an FM radio: the FMT-02 sends the DAB+ signal on a free FM frequency to your car radio. If your car has an AUX input, the cable connection is even cleaner. Without FM reception and without an AUX input, Bluetooth remains, if your car radio supports it.

How is the FMT-02 powered?

Via the cigarette lighter or a USB port in the car. Power enters through the Micro-USB DC-in. No battery is built in. It is mounted on the glass with the supplied suction cup, and the antenna is placed inside the vehicle.

Can I make calls or stream music through the FMT-02?

It supports Bluetooth with A2DP, AVRCP and the hands-free profile HFP. That lets you play music, podcasts and navigation prompts from your phone. No subscription or internet connection of the adapter is needed; the phone supplies the sound.
