Why the MA 6.3?

The Ovation series is handmade at AVM in Malsch, with run-in time and final inspection before delivery. Per monoblock, 40 selected MOSFET transistors carry the load, fed from a 1000 VA toroidal transformer and 200,000 µF of filter capacitance. The fully balanced, DC-coupled design and a damping factor above 400 keep the bass dry and precise even at high levels.

What you get

Concentrated power-amp performance, two chassis of it: 680 watts at 8 ohms and 1000 watts at 4 ohms per block, at 101 dB(A) signal-to-noise ratio and under 0.1% THD. The signal comes in balanced via XLR (14 kΩ) or unbalanced via RCA (6.8 kΩ); according to the manual both sockets are present but usable only alternately. You'll look in vain for controls, source selection or converters – and that's by design. The MA 6.3 is a pure power amplifier, it works behind a preamplifier and wakes via a 3.5 mm trigger input.

Who is the MA 6.3 suited for – and who isn't it for?

Ideal if you're set on consistent channel separation and want to give each speaker its own amplifier with its own power supply. Honestly: if you prefer something more compact and don't want a separate preamplifier, an integrated amplifier from the A series suits you better. And if you assume the MA 8.3 is simply the stronger power amplifier, look closer: AVM states only "over 600 watts" at 8 ohms for the 8.3 – an open figure that can't be meaningfully compared with the 6.3's 680 watts. What's actually documented differently is the tube input stage, dual power supply, weight, chassis height and the stated 2-ohm power figure of the 8.3.

It's a mono power amplifier, meaning a monoblock for exactly one channel. That's why you need two units for stereo – and that's exactly how AVM sells and ships it: as a pair. This design fully separates the channels and avoids any mutual interference via a shared power supply.

Do I additionally need a preamplifier?

Does the MA 6.3 have a remote control?

No, no remote control is included in the scope of delivery. The manual lists a power cable and trigger plug. The power amplifier is switched on and off either directly on the unit or automatically via the trigger signal from your preamplifier – the usual and more practical route for a power amplifier.
