The AudioQuest ThunderBird 48 eARC Priority is the higher stage of the eARC specialist cables: an HDMI cable whose audio return channel from the TV to the amplifier is placed structurally in the foreground. It's not a better ThunderBird 48, but a differently built cable for a different run.

Why the ThunderBird 48 eARC Priority?

It shares the principle with the Vodka 48 eARC Priority, but goes a step further in both disciplines. The eARC and ground-reference conductors carry 10% silver, the four AV data pairs sit at Cinnamon level with 1.25% silver instead of Forest level. Above all, though, Level 5 noise dissipation works here, the most elaborate execution in this cable family. On a return channel that hangs between two devices with their own power supplies and can pick up plenty of high frequency there, that's not a label but the actual point.

What you get

A passive HDMI cable in 0.6, 1, 1.5, 2, or 3 metres – the usual distances between the TV and the amplifier rack. The full 48 Gbit/s for 8K, 4K/120, HDR, and Dolby Vision are also there; the eARC prioritisation costs you no picture capability. What differs from the standard model is solely the distribution of the material effort.

Who is this cable suitable for – and who isn't it for?

Honestly: this stage only pays off once there's a system behind it that actually passes on subtle differences – a proper multichannel system or a high-quality soundbar, plus a TV that acts as the player for everything. If most of your signal runs through the AV receiver, the Vodka 48 eARC Priority is the more sensible stage, and the rest of the budget is better placed elsewhere.

Our verdict

The ThunderBird 48 eARC Priority is a consistently designed specialist tool: maximum effort exactly where the sound is generated in TV-centric systems, and none where it wouldn't help. Whether your system can carry this stage, we're happy to assess with you – HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, 044 680 22 00, WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls), or shop@hdzuerisee.ch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cable contain pure silver?

No. The eARC and ground-reference conductors carry a 10% silver content, not 100% silver. The four picture data pairs sit at Cinnamon level with 1.25% silver. This cable also has no battery bias system (DBS) – that belongs to the series above. Numbers rather than marketing names.

What does Noise-Dissipation Level 5 bring on an audio cable?

The eARC return channel connects two devices with their own power supplies, often routed across the back of the TV cabinet where power, network, and antenna cables sit close together. Level 5 is the most elaborate noise dissipation in this family and keeps exactly this picked-up high frequency away from the signal path. An underestimated spot, that cable clutter.

Does it replace the standard ThunderBird 48?

No, it complements it. The standard ThunderBird 48 is built for the direction from source to display, this cable for the audio return path from the TV. In a system with a streamer, player, and TV apps, both have their place – at different sockets and with different jobs.

What length makes sense between the TV and the amplifier?

Usually 1 to 1.5 metres are enough, since the TV and amplifier tend to sit in the same cabinet. Measure the run including cable routing behind the device and plan a bit of slack for a swivel-arm wall mount. Too short pulls at the connector, too long ends up as a tangle in the dust.

Why order the ThunderBird 48 eARC Priority at HD Zürisee?

Because we don't sell this cable to everyone. It only pays off in TV-centric systems with a matching playback chain, and that's exactly what we clarify with you beforehand. On top of that come a specialist-trade guarantee, our own technician for installation, and a team in Wädenswil that has been setting up home cinemas for decades.

Goes well with

The standard ThunderBird 48 model for the source-to-display run is found under HDMI cables. Amplifiers and soundbars sit in the Home cinema section, and the complete series is shown in the AudioQuest world.
