The Atlantis Lab AT38 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a horn tweeter and a 38 cm woofer that, with 98 dB sensitivity, can be driven by anything from small tube amplifiers to powerful power amps.

The French manufacturer Atlantis Lab, founded in 1998 by Eric Buy, builds it with Eighteen Sound drivers in a cabinet of faux leather and oak. The AT38 is the top of the range – and you can tell: 114 cm tall, 60 kilos per speaker. Not exactly carry-on luggage.

Why the AT38?

Each of the three drivers works only within its own range: the 38 cm paper woofer with neodymium magnet covers 30 to 400 Hz, a 1.4-inch compression driver handles the midrange from 400 Hz to 6 kHz, and a 1-inch neodymium compression driver with horn takes care of the highs from 6 to 20 kHz. That creates headroom: the manufacturer quotes 1500 W power handling (3000 W peak) and an amplifier range of 6 to 1000 W – compatible with tube, transistor and digital amplifiers.

The bass-reflex port is adjustable in six steps. That way you adapt the bass to your room instead of the room to the bass. The terminals are made of silver-plated pure copper.

What you hear

Horn systems stand for immediacy and effortless dynamics. On top of that comes a 38 cm woofer that, according to the manufacturer, reaches down to 30 Hz and lays a bass foundation for which other concepts need a subwoofer. With 98 dB sensitivity, a few watts are enough for decent levels – a small tube amplifier has nothing to hide here. If you like your music life-size, this is the right tool.
