Anthem MRX 540 8K – 5-Channel AV Receiver

The Anthem MRX 540 8K is an AV receiver with five built-in power amps and a preamp that processes 7.2 channels. It's the smallest of the three MRX 8K receivers and the most direct path to Anthem's ARC Genesis. If you don't need eleven channels but want a living room to sound truly clean, this is exactly right for you.

Why the MRX 540 8K?

Anthem doesn't cut corners on the entry model. ARC Genesis is fully on board, measurement microphone included – and in a living room with a sofa and hard walls, clean calibration achieves more than any extra power amp. The five Class AB channels deliver 100 watts into 8 ohms, measured with two channels driven – Anthem states that honestly instead of a fantasy number.

What you'll hear

Five power amps and 7.2 processing – that gap is deliberate, and it's your upgrade path. Internally you run 5.1 or 3.1.2 with two height channels; for full 5.1.2 you later add a two-channel power amp to the preamp outputs. Sonically you'll hear Anthem's calm signature: voices stay intelligible when things get loud, and after calibration the bass sounds like an instrument rather than a piece of furniture. On the video side, everything runs natively over HDMI 2.1 with 8K/60 Hz, 4K/120 Hz, VRR, and ALLM – the games console will be pleased.

Who is the MRX 540 8K for?

Straight talk: it's meant for living-room cinemas where five good speakers matter more than nine mediocre ones. Ideal if you're starting with 5.1 and want to keep the door open to 5.1.2. Not ideal if four height channels are planned from the outset – then the MRX 740 or 1140 is the more honest choice. And if you're mainly a vinyl listener: there's no phono input here.

How many channels does the Anthem MRX 540 8K amplify?

Five – each with 100 watts into 8 ohms. The preamp, by contrast, processes 7.2 channels. Internally this gives you a 5.1 setup or 3.1.2 with two height channels; for full 5.1.2 you add a two-channel power amp to the preamp outputs. That can be retrofitted at any time without replacing the receiver.

Can the MRX 540 8K do Dolby Atmos?

Yes. Internally it covers 3.1.2 – front left, center, right plus two height speakers and a subwoofer. If you want 5.1.2 with full surrounds, you add a two-channel power amp via the 7.2 preamp outputs. The receiver also decodes DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced. The height channels work as ceiling speakers or as add-on Atmos modules.

Does the MRX 540 8K have a phono input?

No, there's no phono input. For a turntable you need a separate phono preamp connected to one of the analog line-level inputs – sonically often the better solution anyway. What do I need ARC Genesis for?

ARC Genesis measures your room with the supplied microphone and corrects what the walls do to the sound – above all bass buildup and boominess. That's the biggest audible gain in most living rooms. The software runs on Mac or PC, and the receiver stores the profiles.
