The WiiM Mini is a compact network streamer that makes an existing stereo system streaming-ready over Wi-Fi. It's barely bigger than a beer mat, costs less than a decent RCA cable - and still does exactly what other devices charge ten times as much for.

Why the WiiM Mini?

Because your system is probably still perfectly fine. The amplifier sounds good, the speakers do too - streaming is simply missing. Instead of replacing everything, you plug the Mini into a spare input, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and within two minutes you have AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, internet radio and your NAS collection on your system.

The WiiM Home app brings everything together in one place and also comes with a 10-band equalizer - useful if your shelf isn't acoustically quite what the speaker manufacturer had in mind.

What you hear

The Mini outputs up to 192 kHz / 24-bit, digitally via the optical output and in analog via the built-in TI DAC with 106 dB signal-to-noise ratio. If you already have a good DAC or an amplifier with a digital input, use the optical output - then the Mini is a pure source and your existing converter keeps doing the work.

Gapless playback is on board, as is multiroom with other WiiM or AirPlay 2 devices. And because Bluetooth works in both directions, you can also quickly play from a guest's phone without anyone needing to join your Wi-Fi.

Who is the WiiM Mini for?

For anyone with a working system who just wants to close the streaming gap. It's also a perfect hit as a second or third system in the kitchen, office or bedroom.

Straight talk: the Mini has no LAN connection, no display and no headphone output. It runs exclusively over Wi-Fi - in a house with thick walls and weak reception, the larger WiiM Pro with a network jack is the more honest choice. And if you connect the analog output to a high-resolution chain, you'll eventually hear that the DAC is where corners were cut here. At this price point, that's not a criticism, just physics.

Our verdict

The WiiM Mini is the best argument against replacing a good old system just because it lacks streaming. It makes little fuss, runs stably, and visually disappears behind the rack - exactly how a good source device should behave. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, it's the device we most often recommend when someone wants to "just try out" what streaming is actually good for.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid streaming subscription for the WiiM Mini?

No. Internet radio, podcasts, music from your NAS or computer, and AirPlay 2 from iPhone, iPad or Mac all work without any subscription. A service like Spotify, Tidal or Qobuz is an option if you already use one - it's not a requirement for operation.

Can I connect headphones to the WiiM Mini?

No, the WiiM Mini has no headphone output. The 3.5 mm jack is a pure line output with no headphone amplifier. For headphones, you need an amplifier or headphone amplifier behind it - or take a look at the larger WiiM Ultra, which brings a genuine headphone output on the front.

Can the WiiM Mini drive a power amp or active speakers directly?

Yes. The analog output can be switched from fixed to adjustable in the WiiM Home app, and then you control the volume directly at the Mini. Important: set this before connecting, otherwise full level hits your power amp from the start - which neither your speakers nor your neighbours will appreciate.

What's the difference between the WiiM Mini and the WiiM Pro?

The WiiM Pro has a LAN connection, Chromecast, Roon Ready, RCA jacks instead of a 3.5 mm jack, and an additional coaxial output. The Mini is the slim entry point for a stable Wi-Fi network and a spare input on your system. Sonically, both work with the same DAC chip.
