The WiiM Amp Ultra is a streaming integrated amplifier with a 3.5-inch touchscreen that combines a network player, an ESS Sabre DAC and a dual Class-D power stage in a single housing. It's the flagship of the range – and the device that finally pulls WiiM out of the budget corner.

Why the WiiM Amp Ultra?

Because for the first time there's real power behind it: two TPA3255 chips with PFFB feedback and six OPA1612 op-amps deliver 100 W at 8 ohms and 200 W at 4 ohms per channel. That puts even large floorstanding speakers and higher room volumes well within reach.

Add to that the 3.5-inch touchscreen behind glass, which shows cover art, VU meters or a clock, a real volume knob, HDMI ARC with Dolby Digital processing, a subwoofer output and the full streaming list including Roon Ready and Qobuz Connect. The aluminium WiiM Voice Remote 2 is included.

What you hear

The ESS ES9039Q2M is the most modern converter in the WiiM lineup and delivers over 120 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Combined with the power reserves, that produces a sound that doesn't collapse at higher levels: the bass stays dry, the treble clean, and the soundstage doesn't fold in when it gets loud.

RoomFit room correction measures your setup via your smartphone's microphone and smooths out the roughest room modes. It's no substitute for proper speaker placement – but a very useful tool when family reasons mean the speakers simply have to stay exactly where they are.

Who is the WiiM Amp Ultra for?

For anyone who wants a full system in one device without getting into a power debate. Also as the centrepiece of a living room where music and TV sound run through the same speakers.

Straight talk: No AirPlay 2, no headphone output, no phono input – if you spin records or listen a lot on headphones, you'll need extra gear. And we'll stay honest: the trade press isn't unanimously thrilled. What Hi-Fi? finds the sound correct but not especially exciting, while LowBeats and HIFI.DE celebrate it. Both sides have a point – which is exactly why a conversation is worth more here than a star rating.

Our verdict

The Amp Ultra is the point at which an all-in-one solution stops being a compromise. It replaces streamer, DAC, preamp and power amp without pushing itself into the foreground. Anyone who claims all-in-one always sounds like a budget version simply hasn't heard this device yet – that's easy to fix, and we're happy to help at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WiiM Amp Ultra's power enough for large floorstanding speakers?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. 100 W at 8 ohms and 200 W at 4 ohms are comfortable enough even for large floorstanding speakers in living rooms up to roughly 40 square metres. It only gets tight with very low-efficiency models with a heavily fluctuating impedance – tell us your speaker model and we'll run the numbers.

Does the WiiM Amp Ultra have AirPlay 2?

No. It supports Chromecast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music Cast, DLNA and Roon Ready, but no AirPlay 2. If AirPlay is your main route to music, the cheaper WiiM Amp remains the right choice – or you add an AirPlay-capable source.

Can I connect headphones to the WiiM Amp Ultra?

No, there's no headphone output. You'll need a separate headphone amp for that. If listening on headphones has a fixed place in your day, it's worth combining it with a WiiM Ultra as a source – it comes with a real headphone output and its own amplifier.

Does the WiiM Sub Pro work wirelessly with the Amp Ultra?

Yes. The WiiM Sub Pro can be paired wirelessly over the network with the Amp Ultra; you set level, phase and crossover frequency in the WiiM Home app. Alternatively, the classic wired connection works via the subwoofer RCA output – both give you a cleanly calibrated 2.1 system.
