Clearaudio Professional Power 24V Power Supply, Silver

The Clearaudio Professional Power 24V is a stabilised linear power supply that feeds the 24-volt drive of a Clearaudio turntable with DC voltage in place of the standard power supply.

According to the manufacturer it's intended for turntables in the Ovation and Innovation series. The silver aluminium cylinder houses a mains transformer, filtering and electronic protection – the unglamorous side of analogue operation that you only learn to appreciate once it's missing.

Why the Professional Power 24V?

Ovation and Innovation regulate their DC motor via their own real-time electronics. That regulation can only work as calmly as the voltage it receives. Residual ripple and interference from the mains would otherwise become constant micro-corrections to the drive. The Professional Power provides a filtered, stabilised DC voltage for this via a permanently attached DC cable; on the back, a mains switch, an IEC inlet with fuse and a grounding terminal.

Who is the Professional Power 24V for?

For Ovation and Innovation owners who've already worked on their chain and are now tackling the drive. Straight talk: concept and Performance DC are 12-volt turntables – the 12V version is responsible for them, not this unit. And honesty stays honesty: if levelling, tracking force or azimuth aren't sorted yet, you'll get more out of those than out of the power supply. Anyone wanting a complete break from the mains ends up at the Smart Power 24V.

Does my turntable need 12 or 24 volts?

That depends on the series: Ovation and Innovation run on 24 volts, concept and Performance DC on 12 volts. The quickest way to check is on the original power supply, where the output voltage is printed. This page shows the 24-volt version in silver; for 12 volts there's the sister model.

What happens if I connect the wrong voltage?

In the best case the motor won't start up cleanly; in the worst case the motor electronics get damaged. That's why Clearaudio offers two separate versions, and we ask about your model before you buy. A quick look at your current power supply spares you any discussion with service.

What sets it apart from the Smart Power 24V?

The Professional Power is a linear power supply: it cleans and stabilises the current from the mains socket. The Smart Power runs the turntable from a battery during operation and thereby disconnects it from the mains entirely. Clearaudio explicitly places the Professional Power between the standard power supply and the battery solution.

How much current does the power supply deliver?

Maximum 500 milliamps at 24 volts, electronically fused. That's designed precisely for the motor demand of the Ovation and Innovation turntables: Clearaudio states their power consumption at a bit over three watts, somewhat more depending on speed. So it's a specialist, not a universal lab supply.
