Bluesound Node Icon Network Streamer

The Bluesound Node Icon is a network streamer with dual-mono DAC, THX-AAA headphone amplifier and variable analog output that drives a power amp or active speakers directly as a digital preamp.

It's the flagship of the Node range, aimed at anyone who wants to turn their existing chain into a streaming hub without compromising on the source component. If you've ever had a streamer, a DAC and a preamp stacked as three separate boxes, you'll appreciate a single enclosure.

Why the Node Icon?

At its core sit two ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M converters in a true dual-mono arrangement: the left and right channels are processed completely separately, with cleanly decoupled signal paths and power supplies. That pushes the signal-to-noise ratio at the XLR output to −129 dB and distortion down to 0.0004 percent. On top of that comes Qrono D/A technology from MQA Labs, which the Icon is the very first device to carry. The anodized aluminum housing keeps vibration and interference out.

An uncompromising trio of streamer, DAC and preamp that audibly moves a good chain forward – and brings along one of the strongest headphone outputs you'll find in any streamer. Frequently asked questions

Is the output level of the Node Icon variable?

Yes. The XLR and RCA outputs ship with a variable level, and you control the volume in the BluOS app or with the remote. That lets the Icon go straight to a power amp or active speakers. If you connect it to an integrated amplifier, switch the output to a fixed level in the app.

Can I connect headphones directly to the Node Icon?

Yes, via two 6.3 mm jacks. Behind them sits a genuine THX-AAA headphone amplifier delivering 230 mW into 32 ohms – enough even for more demanding models up to 250 ohms. Two jacks also mean you can listen with someone else without hunting for an adapter.

What are the balanced XLR outputs for?

XLR transmits the signal free of interference and hum loops to a power amp or active speakers, with a signal-to-noise ratio of −129 dB instead of −121 dB over RCA. For longer cable runs and racks with many devices, that pays off audibly. For short runs, RCA remains a clean solution too.

What does the dual-mono DAC do for you?

The left and right channels each get their own ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M converter with a separate signal path. That lowers crosstalk and noise and produces a wide, clearly layered soundstage – instruments sit cleanly separated in space instead of blurring together. The Icon is also the first device with Qrono D/A technology from MQA Labs.

Does the Node Icon support AirPlay 2?

Yes. You stream directly from your iPhone, iPad or Mac to the Node Icon and integrate it into an Apple Home setup. Android devices play to it via the BluOS app or Bluetooth. Internet radio and files from your network run without any paid subscription – Tidal or Qobuz are an option, not a requirement.
