Straight talk: This set is for vinyl listeners who want genuine Technics direct drive with a high-quality moving-coil system – fully mounted. Honestly: the Ortofon MC-X40 needs an MC-capable phono stage. If you only have an MM input, we'll plan the right stage in with you. If you'd rather keep things simple on an MM input, go for one of our 2M or Concorde Music sets instead.

What does the MC-X40 bring sonically?

Do I still need a phono preamp?
Yes – an MC-capable one. Moving-coil cartridges output a lower voltage than MM and need a phono stage with higher gain and matching impedance. Many integrated amplifiers only have MM on board. We'll check your chain and recommend the right MC stage if needed.
