The AudioQuest NRG-Y3 is a three-pole power cable with a C13 connector that expands the NRG series with two things: ZERO-Tech and silver-plated drain conductors.
In the lineup it sits one step above the X models and one below the NRG-Z3 – not as their successor, but as a more elaborate variant offered alongside them. If you started with the X3 and want more, this is where you land.
Why the NRG-Y3?
Two ingredients make the difference. First, ZERO-Tech: AudioQuest builds the cable so it presents no characteristic impedance to the current – load peaks pass through uncompressed instead of getting stuck in the line. Second, the silver-plated shield conductors, which collect high-frequency noise and drain it to ground before it reaches the electronics. Add to that the familiar Long-Grain Copper conductors in a semi-solid, concentric arrangement, direction-controlled and cold-welded.
What you get
More black between the notes. That's the most honest description: the gap between the music and the background grows, fine reverb tails become legible, and the system sounds less like electronics. Digital sources and preamps in particular respond clearly to this – they work with small signal levels that any noise gets in the way of.
Who is the NRG-Y3 suited for?
For streamers, DACs, CD players, phono preamps and preamplifiers with a C13 socket – in other words, the sensitive half of your system. Plainly put: on a powerful power amp it isn't the ideal cable; there, cross-section matters more than fine polish, and the Monsoon or Thunder are the better choice. And if your system already runs through a good power filter, the gain will be smaller.
Our verdict
The NRG-Y3 is the point where the NRG series grows up. It brings real technology instead of just better copper, while staying affordable. If we had to recommend a single cable for the source of a well-sorted mid-range system, it would very often be this one.

Frequently asked questions
Is the NRG-Y3 the successor to the NRG-X3?
No. Both cables are offered in parallel and sit at different levels of the same series. The X3 is the entry point with pure LGC conductors, the Y3 adds ZERO-Tech and silver-plated drain conductors. So you're not buying a newer model, but a more elaborately built one.
What does ZERO-Tech do in a power cable?
The construction avoids a characteristic impedance. Simply put: the cable doesn't slow down short-term current demands. Your device gets what it asks for during load peaks instead of being served with delay. This is audible as cleaner transients and a more stable sound image.
Which component should I use it on first?
Start with the source or the preamp. That's where signal levels are smallest, so the effect of a quieter power supply is correspondingly larger. If a power filter is in the system, by the way, the best cable is best placed between the wall and the filter – we're happy to discuss the sequence with you.
How does the Y3 differ from the NRG-Z3?
The Z3 goes further in conductor material and cross-section and adds AudioQuest's patented ground-noise dissipation. It's the more thorough but also considerably more elaborate solution. The Y3 captures most of that gain at a more moderate cost – a classic case of good sense.
What do you get from buying the NRG-Y3 at HD Zürisee?
An assessment that doesn't depend on shelf space. We know the NRG levels from daily use and can tell you from what point the extra cost still pays off in your system. From Wädenswil: 044 680 22 00 · WhatsApp 076 534 22 00 (text only, no calls) · shop@hdzuerisee.ch.
