The Ruark Audio MR1 Mk3 is an active stereo speaker pair for your desk that combines amplifiers, Bluetooth aptX HD, a phono input for turntables and further connections in two compact cabinets.

Two small cabinets, one power cable, no extra amplifier – and still real hi-fi. The MR1 Mk3 is Ruark's answer to the question of just how good desktop sound can really be. Answer: pretty good.

Why the MR1 Mk3?

The MR1's reputation isn't an accident: the previous Mk2 generation was named best desktop speaker by What Hi-Fi? seven times in a row. The Mk3 builds on that – with a slightly larger, newly tuned cabinet, the new NS+ mid/bass driver and a Class D power stage whose technology is derived from Ruark's flagship R410. More power, more control, deeper bass.

New with the Mk3: for the first time in the MR1 line, you can connect a turntable directly. The built-in MM phono input turns the two cabinets into a complete vinyl setup – no separate phono preamp needed.

What you hear

Each cabinet houses an 85 mm NS+ mid/bass driver with a natural-fibre cone and a 20 mm silk-dome tweeter, driven by 2×25 watts of Class D. The result is a sound with surprisingly deep, clean bass, clear mids and refined highs – noticeably more grown-up than two such small cabinets suggest. A subwoofer output is on board if you want to go even deeper later.

Bottom line: for your desk, a shelf or as a smart second system, they're excellent. If you want to fill a large room, go for active floorstanders instead.

Who is the MR1 Mk3 for?

Ideal at the computer, on the sideboard, with your TV (via the optical/3.5 mm input) or as a compact vinyl setup with an MM turntable. Perfect if you want real hi-fi but don't have room for separate components.

Who it's not for: if you're after large living-room levels or home-cinema punch, you're better served by bigger active or passive speakers. And if you expect WLAN streaming like Spotify Connect built into the speaker: the MR1 Mk3 streams via Bluetooth, not over WLAN.
