Who is the Founder 40B for? (and who it's not for – straight talk)

For anyone with limited space or a wish for high-quality sound on a stand or shelf – and as an excellent surround or rear speaker in a Founder home cinema. Straight talk: a bookshelf speaker doesn't replace a full-grown floorstander in a large room when it comes to the very lowest bass. If you want cinema-grade slam in your gut, pair the 40B with a subwoofer. For near-field listening and normal living rooms, though, it doesn't need one.

For best sound, yes. On a sturdy speaker stand, the 40B stands free and at ear height, which noticeably improves soundstage and bass. It also works on a shelf, but shouldn't be wedged in. We'll show you the matching stands.

The 40B uses the Ultra-High-Excursion driver and the bass-reflex, internally braced cabinet of the Founder series. That lets it reach down to around 41 Hz – unusually deep for a stand-mount. For the very deepest cinema effects, it can be paired with a subwoofer.

Is the Founder 40B suitable for home cinema?
